No idea of the cost of the insurance

I’m pleased to say my lad passed his driving test last Saturday. I was especially pleased as he had 1 hour assessment drive on his 17th then the rest has been with me in his mum’s Vauxhall Vectra. The elation on Saturday morning was soon overcome when he realised that the insurance we had on the car ( Marmalade £94 any car supervised driving) lapsed as soon as he had passed his test.

Now he’s not far off finishing his1965 series 2a land rover, fgh177c.webs.com which he will use as his first car. When its ready the insurance is quoted at £1100. I also run a series land rover so the idea was that he could use mine until his own is finished. Now I’m not that old but in my day it was just a case of ringing the insurance company up and adding a driver. Unfortunately as my land rover was originally dispatched to the MOD that mean’s that the won’t let him name it on his quoted insurance for his own. All last week I wasted my time with footman James with that one.

Anyhow :unamused:

We got home and filled out a page with go compare. Maybe we could put him on the Vectra insurance. £3300. So we opened a page on the trader and thought try the reg of a 850cc Matiz. Still, nearly 3 grand. We tried all sorts of motors then he gave me the reg of a 1990 defender. Go compare quoted £2400 but after a phone call to footman james he got it insured in his own name for £967

Only thing was we didn’t have one although a bloke in Leeds did. £1500 later at about dinnertime he was on the road legal.

Thing I cannot understand is 3000 just to insure and old euro box or 976 for a defender.

i think its down to the fact that more young drivers are running about in small cheap euroboxes, so the insurers prices will be higher as the risk of a claim is higher. not many young drivers run about in defenders, so generally are ‘lower risk’ from an insurers point of view. i paid £1850 for fully comp insurance on a 1968 mini van when i was 17, it was an 850 cc, no modifications. My mate who lives down the road, paid £1100 for insurance on a series 3 land rover.
I now pay £400 fully comp on a mini cooper, which is modified - it hit 108bhp at the flywheel on a recent rolling road session (im 22 now). Never undersood how the insurers get their prices, they seem to vary so much, when i was ringing around the most expensive quote i got for that car was £3500!, so i was well pleased when i got a quote for £400. Its also worth haggling, and getting a few insurers to beat each others prices.

Marlow check out www.bell.com they specialise in younger drivers and are BY FAR the cheapest I have ever found. I dont think they list on go compare
