Ex Police cars

I’ll be changing the car soon and after perusing ebay and Autotrader, I couldn’t help noticing how many Ex Police cars are around and they seem quite good value, particularly the Volvo estates.
A volvo T5 is what I really fancy and wondered if any of you had experience with them.
They are supposed to be well maintained etc, but then they get thrashed too :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Cheers

Thrashed or safely driven at high speed within the perameters and capabilities of the vehicle   - EX traffic cop driven car - YES PLEASE

They may be “Thrashed”, but I know they are maintained (to high standards)regardless of cost.

Sorry I can’t help more.

NB

You`d be better cutting out the middle man and buying one direct from the car auctions - save yourself a few quid !!

stinky, if you can find the auctions where the various police forces sell their vehicles you would be better off financially than buying from a middle - man. Do a Google search and see what comes up. If I remember correctly there used to be one in the Oxford area that specialised in ex - plod vehicles, but I think it was only open to bona fide traders. Failing that, this guy seems to sell some decent kit on e-bay : force_auctions_uk

I have seen many examples of ex police cars, they may be well maintained but like a rental or pool car, the drivers don’t look after them, the interior will almost certainly look very battered, and with all the equipment fitted to the cars to do their job you will find loads of holes where it has been none to carefully removed, the paintwork will be tatty as they will not have seen any polish until the car has reached the reseller and they will probably have been driven aggresivly for a good amount of miles. Boot space will be worn, look in the back of a police car and see how much stuff they cram into them, and I bet half of the stuff is launched into it.
But don’t let me put you off

shrek is ex plod ,he will be the one to ask,

I bought an ex-police car. Mine wasn’t a traffic car though, just a pool car.

It’s a basic Peugeot 406 diesel, X plate, just under 100,000 on the clock when I got it.
I asked the police for, and got, a complete history of the service and any other work done on the car, including tyres, exhausts, clutch, brake shoes etc fitted.
It has had a lot of equipment fitted inside, but there was only one hole bored in the rear wing, which I bored out to fit a normal radio aerial into. The interior is in pretty good nick although the front seats are well worn and could do with replacing.
It seems to go quite well for a basic car. I surprised my mate who started in front of me. We were both heading home from the yard, him in a Fiat Stilo Abarth, me in the 406. He struggled to keep up even though I was sticking religiously to the speed limits Mind you, he drives like a granny :unamused:

It’s quite simple to avoid buying an ex-police car with holes bored all over it.
What you have to do is, look at it.
If it’s full of holes, don’t buy it.

If your looking at a T5 then more often than not these are used by the Traffic Dept, the drivers are trained to a higher standard of driving than the normal ‘bobbies’, hence the cars being used well within their capabilities,
Some forces still maintain their own vehicles, some use main dealers, but no expense is spared in running costs or replacement parts. There may be a couple of holes in the dash, and the seats may have a little wear on them, but a trip to the scrapyard and an afternoons work can change that for you.

Personally I would avoid a ‘beat car’ like and ■■■■■■ or Astra, these are drivin by officers who are trained to a ‘standard’ lower than that of a Traffic cop, and as you may have seen or heard yourself, not driven with much respect for the vehicle itself.

I have seen ex Police cars run through both BCA and Mainheim, so could be worth a look at their respective sites to see if theres any more info.

Thanks for that.
Pretty much what i thought.

I’ve read about avoiding beat cars as they can be driven by half a dozen different driver a day. I’ve seent hem hammered over speed bumps etc
Traffic cars seem the way to go…

Found a few interesting sites too…woma.co.uk/police.php

I’ll let you know
