Bulk Tipper to Belgium & France

Looks like I will be taking Linseed out to Belgium and bring wheat back to the UK from France in the New Year - can anyone give advice to keep me legal once i get off the train/ferry - thanks

Make sure you get the Vignette for Belgium, you can get this at the tunnel terminal.

The only other thing to watch for are driving restrictions in France for Public Holidays, Sundays and the busy holiday season.

Apart from that everything else is pretty much as the UK although there are certain documents you need to carry, see this thread

Keep your distance, drive on the right and don’t overtake in heavy rain.

They have a few different signs too but normally only enforce them after you have run up the arse of another truck

Not forgetting the blanket ban on trucks overtaking on 2 lane motorways or dual carriageways between 06.00 and 19.00 in Belgium, helpfully signed by this reminder:

This sign actually indicates that overtaking is, in fact, allowed between 19.00 and 06.00 :imp: :imp:
They are now starting to add supplementary signs with the times underneath.

The standard European sign:

is obviously not good enough for them, so they have gone with their own wacky idea, which doubtless swells the coffers of their flat broke country as the signs are unclear to most folk from other parts of Europe :imp: :imp:

It’s a bit inconsistent because signs with a blue background generally give a positive instruction (you must turn left/right, you must do this minimum speed etc) so this would tend to tell me that trucks must overtake cars, and that a car overtaking a truck has not followed the instruction.

Wheel Nut:

Yeah, you can’t take Cruise Control with you into many places over the water. He’s banned from Antwerp for example

No, the blue round signs are “must” ones (you must turn left/right, you must drive with minimum speed of… etc). The square ones are called “informative signs” and they just give you an information. If you see the sign for a gas station it does not mean that you have to refuel… It’s just gives you an information that you can if you want.

Indeed, and if you see the blue square one with a P on it you don’t have to park. :stuck_out_tongue:

Really appreciated - thanks guys

And illegal immigrants love tippers, it is like relaxing in a big jacuzzi for them

When I was on bulk tippers, you could smuggle any amount of tobacco in through Dover in a load of pre-limed wet animal bones, Customs wouldn’t go within a mile of the trailer… allegedly

On the E40 between Ghyvelde (France) & Jabbeke (Belgium),you are allowed to overtake at any time, as indicated by blue square sign without time under it  .This is likely to change within the new year to a total ban on overtaking for trucks on this section :frowning: .

You may think that the’ no cruise control’ sign is mad, from January you’ll start to see ‘no GPS’ signs, due to the fact that so many foreign ( mainly Eastern block) drivers end up in the middle of fields or the wrong way on ‘one way streets’ just blindly following their GPS systems.

We beat Belgium to it, to stop Belgians using sat navs in stupid places.

HA HA!!! It’s also a better looking sign than ours .
