Are the days of the 7.5 Tonner over?

So I was following a 7.5 Tonner earlier, saw him pull into a layby where another 7.5 was waiting for him to obviously swap some of the load over.

Got me thinking, there are SO many 7.5 tonners out there, and most of them are used purely because there are a lot of older car drivers with the 7.5 tonne entitlement on their license.

As the times move on and more drivers need to take the LGV Cat C test, do TruckNet members think companies will be moving up to 12 and 18 tonners as they need to employ more qualified drivers for the job? surely it makes more sense to give them more of a job to do.

Just a thought,

Alex

The 7.5 tonner will always have a job until the EU weight limits are lifted or scrapped. Not a lot of point having a 12 or 18 tonner that cannot be utilised

most 7.5 limit signs have an exemption though.

I can see them being phased out over the next ten years

I think you might be right Scarab.

7 1/2 tonners are losing their appeal. Now they are speed limited, and as more and more younger people don’t have the C1 without a test.

As the C1 test is so nearly the same as a C, anyone taking a vocational licence would be silly if they didn’t do the C really.

Haulage companies will probably think that if they have to pay a drivers wage, they may as well have them take a larger cargo.

Periodic Driver CPC training for those with C1s as well :exclamation:

which many on grandfather rights still do not realise that they will have to do it - I think we might see a severe shortage of these drivers come 10 Sept 2014

They are not going to lift the weight limits on Swarkstone Causeway Rog. The crumbling14th century bridge is our only convenient route to Derby and the A50

There are 7.5 tonne weight limits (except for access) and there are 7.5 tonne limits throughout the EU because the roads are not able to stand bigger or heavier vehicles.
Because of the weekend driving restrictions in Europe I cannot see the end of the 7.5 tonner any time soon.

In our case they have tried many things to stop the daily damage, barring placing snipers in goon towers. The double deck buses are only used for the school runs probably 5 per day each way. It doesn’t stop all the other prats who use it as a shortcut with 44 tonne trucks.

And they are limited to 56 now so you can’t use the outside lane either.

Not just some mate. I used to live overlooking the causeway. There are probably 20 or 30 per day at least. The cameras were there to stop it but they were vandalised

i can,t see it myself, as said too many limits as well as town centres trying to ban trucks altogether as it is if these companies ended up using bigger trucks then more reason to complain ect, its bad enough in places like york first thing on a morning as it is with alll the parcel companies ect using 7,5tonners if these were replaced with bigger trucks or reduced to using vans(which would mean more vans)

i would presume that if 7.5 did dissapear that some companies may look at large vans rather then move up into bigger wagons,

do vans have a concern on a operators license the same as trucks do?

Some of my best thoughts come when I am in bed

So the local corner shop will now get his delivery of 24 specialist meat pies in a 34’ 6 wheel rigid, the pub snacks driver / rep will deliver a card of dry roasted, 2 boxes of plain and a cheese and onion in an 18 tonner.

The milkman can get rid of that stupid electric cart and use a proper truck to get down the cul de sac and the Royal Mail will cut out the postman by having artics doing doorstep deliveries.

Long live the 7.5 tonner

When they go over 3.5 tonne Yes

How many drivers under the age of 30 do you see driving C1s

Had a look around yesterday and every one that I saw had a driver I deemed to be over 30 driving them !!

never saw me then rog LOL

c+e driving a c1 LOL

I can’t see the 7.5 tonner vanishing any time soon. Although the commercial motor feature a couple of month back did say that in terms of cargo weight moved for cost an 18 tonner made most sense. Finding drivers may be harder with the licensing restrictions and the speed limits have removed a lot of the advantages they had but the all important public opinion is for less big lorries, especially in towns. I like your little 12ton baby volvos. They are only as big as a 7.5tonner :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I drive a MAN 12 tonner which really is just like a glorified 7.5 tonner; in fact, a lot of people mistake it for one, despite it being slightly bigger than a 7.5. I then go into Hyacinth Bucket mode and inform them that actually it’s a class 2 vehicle, dear.   :smiling_imp: :grimacing:
