Hi Dean, This Bedford TL 13 ton GVW is a lorry that I bought in the late 1980s.
It was new to Bass Charrington with a Linkliner body by Boalloy, but I had it
converted to a curtainsider, for when we did the Rank Hovis deliveries.
Perhaps some of my lorries may appear in your new supply of pictures.

“moomooland” Paul i expect you have this pic.
W.J.Riding Seddon Atkinson.

8 Cheers Dean thanks for that, like you say i already have this picture on the Riding’s site.

7Seddon Atkinson 400 Series 4x2 tractor unit Reg No FFV 680S Fleet No 91 ‘Western Star’ was registered new on the 1st of March 1978 at a cost of £18,613 and 63p.

Powered by a Gardner 240 eight cylinder engine in line with a Fuller 9509 gearbox and Eaton 19320 rear axle it was driven from new by Jack Kelly.

Pictured above parked up on the M62 Hartshead Moor service area It is coupled up to one of Riding’s trademark 1450 cubic foot Crane Fruehauf tandem axle powder tankers carrying Corvic plastic granules for ICI.

After being in the fleet for eight years FFV 680S was scrapped and the Gardner 240 engine was removed and sold on to local dealer Syd Hartley for £1,700.

I thought you would have it Paul ! Its unbelievable that Tom kept all the data of how much he paid/dates when he
bought and sold trucks. Impressive.

Lonewolf Yorks:

Gary Charlwood was based in Sandwich. He ran a handful of trucks from the 1970’s, doing mostly traction work from Dover & Ramsgate. Eventually, in the late 90’s / early 2000’s he was in a spot of bother with the ‘Ministry’. By then the majority of his work was with Eric Mattheeuws from Veurne, Belgium, so Charlwood became Mattheeuws Uk, based in Dover.

I also remember Gary, I worked out of Sandwich (Stonar) for a while for a colleague of his, Paul Coomber. About 30 years ago. I know he became (or was bought out by) Matheeuws but that was after my time down there.

Thanks for the input “Lonewolf Yorks”

Hi dean, cracking pics of Owens you Paul and mark never disappoint hers some more courtesy of Ron and Chris, and bubblepics, the Volvo globetrotter was driven by my best mate Duncan,as you can see he never stuck to one make of truck

Looks like the trailer has a mid mounted crane of sorts, could be an early J.F.Pearce truck, Buzzer

Well spotted chap missed that ! You can see the leg that drops down infront of the first trailer axle for stability.

Good stuff Colin, looks like that 88 had a fair few owners in its life. You did well to tie them all up !

I wonder if the second pic is anything to do with the red F88. Different colours but both have the
white strip around the cab and the blue one was following the red one ?

New in October 1981 this ERF ‘B’ Series Reg No YFW 609X must have been among one of the last batch

Some news chaps.

Paul is working his way through some very old negatives that Mark Bailey has kindly given him. They are about 40 years old and were never
developed. Unfortunately the quality of pic will not be as good as normal due to how old they are and obviously they have deteriorated a bit
over the last 40 years. However they are still very good to view in my opinion and as such Paul has edited them in colour so you can
see the colour schemes and black and white. I have always liked black and white as i think they are more nostalgic. The main problem is
the colour is a bit hit and miss ! :unamused:

Second bit of news is that i have aquired alot of photos from the 60’s,70’s,80’s,and 90s that are from a collection. Alot are by the photographer
but he has also bought in alot from various other photographers. Therefore you may have seen some on facebook.

They have all been copyrighted and if anyone wants any removed if they are their photo let me know and i will remove.
I will call these album pics.

Great news Dean! This thread is turning into a reputable archive of its very own! Cheers, Robert :sunglasses:

“MANTRONIC”
Hey Dean and Paul ,you just spoil us Welsh lads ,the British Steel Atkinson Leader was based at the Orb steel plant in Newport ,the colours changed to blue after the steel industry was nationalised .
The Leaders followed on from 4X2 Atkinsons ,but my uncle can remember they had a ruck of Leyland Octopus.

There were a number of photos of these 6x2 units published by Atkinson, but they do pre-date the Leader which wasn’t announced until October 1970 - the Leader was a heavier duty chassis, designed for 38 ton (not tonne!) operation, for the much anticipated weight increases which Andrew mentions below. This is a Mk.2 ‘Silver Knight Reat Steer’, designed for 32T operation (although some were plated at 36T), and had only the 220 Rolls and 6-speed ZF

“pete 359”
Hi all,
Great photos as always gentlemen. Those late 1960’s six wheel units were a popular choice with many welsh steel hauliers, then the threatened weight increase never happened and nobody bought them until 1983 when we leapt from 32 tonnes on four axles to 38 on five or six.I think the green on the early B.S.C. Fleet was carried over from the old Steel Company Of Wales fleet ?
Regards Andrew.

Yes indeed, the weight increase that never was! Although many of the 6x2 tractors available in the mid-60s were spec’d to achieve 32T with an outer axle spread of less than, I think, 38’. Therefore companies who operated shorter trailers at top weight, such as BSC and Northern Ireland Trailers, could still run legally at the full 32T with a 30’ trailer, as opposed to 30T with a 4x2 tractor.

I have an ex-Northern Ireland Trailers ‘Rear Steer’ unit, big long thing with 12’ 6" (3.81m) wheelbase, but only plated at 32T, and the GVW of the tractor is only 18T across the three axles!

Thanks for the info on the Atkis Chris ,your definately the main man on those Atkinsons !

Hello MT …Trevor Davies also had a couple of Foden 4000 series …and Iveco 4 wheeler …fair play you know your stuff…mate …
DEAN …we.,.the old man that is …can only echo …the thought and words of others on this thread …for yourtime and effort ,for posting such amazing material …i mean yeah you spoil us Welsh lads rotten …
The old man particularly liked the Wynns Seddon 32/4 unit …he says it is fitted with a fire screen /whatever …and used on tank work …such as Monsanto Chemicals in Newport …and Coates based at Caerphilly …one of his buddies drove for Wynns at this time with a similar Seddon and that was bitumen out of the old furnacite plant near Aberdare .
DEAN ,…really looking forward to the next batch of Welsh pics …lol …Geraint

Hello Geraint ,we are lucky that Paul shared his pics with us. Plus if it was not for him we would not have seen any of Mark’s pics as the only person who had ever seen
them was Paul.

Now heres one for dad as he really does know his stuff along with all the other Welsh chaps who comment on here !

Your dad mentioned that Wynns Seddon were used on tanker work. Our tanker specialist Chris Webb will know about the fire screen ■■ I dont know if its something to
do with the exhaust on tankers being at the front of the unit under the bumper ? :unamused:

Pitter had a North West depot for a few years in the 1970s. It was at Church Street, Little Lever, Bolton opposite the Jolly Carter pub. For the last 20 odd years it has been the base of Thomas Harwood & Son Ltd.

hello DEAN ,and thank you for another Caddies ,truth to tell im not sure myself whether they had any F12 Volvos ,will have to do a little detective work for you .
They did have one F89 that was lhd ,thank you Trevor

Good day all, Im still trying to search for any pictures of Cadbury’s crumb transporters from the 1990’s which im still certain they used volvo fl10’s but i am starting to doubt, as i am drawing a complete blank, ive seen the pictures of the roadtrain and bedford pictures, they are not dissimulator, im sure they ran tri axle versions. Or even who would of had the distribution contract during the 90’s. thanks
