UK radio ?

Pat Hasler:
Ok, so as most of you know I live in the USA but I really hate American radio stations, the ones up in the northern areas that I live and deliver to are so boring with dull presenters and DJ’s, not that you could really call them DJ’s a they talk in boring drools and have no idea how to entertain the people. The others down in the cities like NYC are a bit more lively but have constant commercials so it’s 2 records followed by 10 minutes of ads, 2 more records and another 10 minutes of ads, so I retune to another similar station or a religious nutter who thinks the rapture is about to happen any day now. The only place in the northern American continent is in Toronto Canada where I have found a great station that has a commercial after about 10 records.
My only sanity saving is that I can use the ‘Tune In’ app on my android phone which is constantly connected to the AUX socket on my truck radio, luckily I have unlimited data and I listen to Heart FM Norhamptonshire, Radio 2 for Ken Bruce, radio 4 for the Archers and the PM show and radio 4 extra for some comedy etc. Heart FM until recently had Stuart and Katie on the breakfast show, I found these quite entertaining but it seems they have vanished and been replaced by Ivan and Emma who are as dull as matt paint FFS, I was reduced to changing channels this morning and listening to that ■■■■■■ Chris Evans because they were driving me up the wall.
What other decent stations are there I could tune to for entertainment ? Since living here I have lost track, good suggestions welcome.

Good afternoon/ evening Pat.

In the UK, For me, radio is either BB Cream Manchester , which is a great listen for anyone from the area. Or as you said yourself, radio 4. Planet rock and LBC are worth a listen too.

But I want to highlight something for you. About 4 years ago, ( maybe a tad longer) I discovered (via tune in app) a great oldies station which takes in Philadelphia, called WVLT Vineland. It broadcasts in its own area on FM and was available online until a couple of years ago. The station suddenly geo blocked it’s internet stream outside of the US.
My point to you is check it out. That is assuming you like American 1950,s and 60’s music.
But, yes, agreat listen.

I actually heard a great stack of oldies music from this station, which is no longer heard here in the UK.

Hope you find this helpful Pat.

Thank you Butcher, I will in fact check them out, I spend at least one day a week in the Philly area

Thanks to all who have replied, I will check them out

planetradio.co.uk/viking/

My local radio station, viking fm. They received a lot of the capital fm listeners after hursty left their breakfast show. And it’s a good laugh. It used to be the old galaxy fm.

Since the demise of radio two an a night, I find myself listening to radio 5 live now.

Somebody mentioned Heart and two presenters.
I hate that format, ‘Simon and Samantha’ or whatever :unamused:
False fun, crap subjects…‘‘Does your dog run and welcome you when you come in, ring in and tell us. What’s the worst thing your partner has bought you, ring in and tell us’’
Who ■■■■ cares! :smiling_imp: just shut the ■■■■ up and play some decent music! :bulb:

That ‘JK and ■■■■ Lucy’ on a Sat morning, a classic example of inane radio verbal diahrrhoea.
Don’t get me started on Alan Carr and Melanie bloody Sykes also on a Sat am on R2, (and I usually like Alan Carr) forced fun and false laughter at pure drivel.
Dumbed Down radio.

Smoothextra and Heart80’s I find quite good, yes they have commercials but only sporadically.

Heart80s is ok but they seem to repeat daily ,abs 80s is varied more imo. Radio 2 play list is beginning to wear a. Bit thin .

I have to agree about Heart80’s - Smoothextra is much the same, I will give Absolute80’s a try (thanks for the tip PD!) I have started to cast my (inter)net a wider by listening to Nostalgie (Belgium) they play a lot of 80’s and 90’s records but don’t have a clue what they are talking about - Ostend seems to be popular though!

I use the tune in app to listen to Irish local radio stations as they announce who has died in the area that day

Many years past I used to listen to Atlantic 252 on Long Wave based in Ireland :- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_252

Magic has a good all round but dj’s aren’t worth the listen…

if classic rock is your thing then planet rock or get the absolute radio ap less adverts with it. christian o’connell isn’t to bad between 6 to ten. they also do 60’s 70’s 80’s classic rock

Absolute 70s/80s/90s.

Except for the good ole Beeb, it’s difficult to find a station these days that don’t play adverts.

I’ve also found that when I listen through Tune In, I get adverts for the first couple of minutes.

Radio 5 live for me most of the time.
Can be irritating sometimes, less so now they have dropped the hi hat in the background when doing the weather/traffic.
Also ■■■■ when Wimbledon is on etc, but, usually something on worth listening to.

Get your wallet out and buy Sirius , tight arse :unamused:

BFBS the army boys station in Colchester is easy listening on 107fm

6 Music for me. Good music mix and not too much chatting.

I also listened to that in the early to mid 90s they played some pretty decent music

radio 2 for me,nothing I like better than hearing vanessa feltz go on and on and on,steve wright in the afternoon, love it when he keeps interrupting my favourite songs or extracts the urine out of them, other staions inc sam fm Wiltshire, keeping on and on about this bloody six o clock cru [he spells it that way]then adverts for about 5 min, switch to another station, more talk, more adverts, then maybe, just maybe, they might put a song on and surprise me,when I got my new wagon I thought sod it put a CD on,what do I find, a basic radio,no CD player,so i’m stuck with just a bloody radio, went around it the long way but in answer to your post no station in the uk is any good.

I also found the new wagon had no cd player and was moaning to one of the younger drivers about it when I realised he was giving me that condescending “old ■■■■” look…

Apparently, one is supposed to “toof” yer Spotify thru yer wireless connection to "stream"yer downloads.

Oh right, of course, I knew that.

Down wif the kids, me…

for me it gets no better than radio north 846 medium wave, also available to stream on tinterweb with an app thingy…all religious on a sun,and also a cpl hours each day, gospel bible bashing stuff, but apart from that, its all oldies and modern country with a few presenters in the evening…its so bad its refreshingly great.the owner of the station does the voiceover for every single advert with the same jingles…the presenter that ends up at midnight, orders his fish supper on air as he leaves as he knows they will be listening in the chippy, and usually dont know what button does what…similar to leaving your grandad alone in the booth for the 1st time and letting him get on with it…pure class.
