Don’t worry about a translater mate, I spend most of my time shouting at the TV because so many people are already speaking American.

Why all Cabovers?

Yes mate, length restrictions, there are a few conventionals about over here, but not many.

We have a few bosses Associations here (the Freight Transport Association and the Road Transport Assoc’ to name but two), who have the ear of the government, and their European equivalents. They effectively manage how transport is governed. So, to maximise load carrying space, trailers are up to 45 or 46 feet long and maximum length, for a standard artic (I think you would call them semi’s) is 16.5 metres or 59 feet roughly. However, we run at up to a maximum gross weight of 44t on a standard artic, a bit heavier than your mgw I understand.
Our city centres have smaller roads than yours (I think), so where we can get our trucks in and out with few problems, you would be doing well to get your unit in, let alone a 50 foot plus long trailer as well.

Just out of interest, what do you call cabover drivers, over there ■■?
(Please bear in mind our fairly strict language rules when answering :smiley: , a line of [zb]s wouldn’t help much :open_mouth: :laughing: :laughing: ).

Emm probably because we have a little bit less land than you guys so we need to restrict the lengths of cabs and trailers etc etc.

A CO driver is usually called something like “The first man at the scene”

I have driven COs, the feeling that my feet were helping support the front bumper was a rather unnerving.

Higher with permits (fees)

Tons or Tonnes are not used for vehicle weights, pounds are.
Had not thought about it before but even the laws specify pounds.
I think ton is seen as a less specific measure?

Freightliner tried to get the law changed here years ago,
promoting a cabover called the Argosy that they had invested millions
in. They were trying to get the law changed to just a maximum truck length
from the current 53’ max trailer and 65’ max overall to just 65’ max length
giving an advantage to COs.

DOT (US Department of Transportation) was less than enthusiastic.
Never caught on with drivers either.

I suspect that American tons are different from British tons. There might also be a difference in the pounds as well.

Tonnes, however, are a very specific unit.
