Training advice ....Passed my Test!

I have done a search on the forums and could not find anything.
I wonder if anyone has advice on who to use for their class C training in this area.
I spoke to a company today and they want 1296 + VAT for the C and then the same for theC+E.
I don`t know, seems a bit steep to me, maybe I am tight…
Any advice appreciated, in the meantime the yelllow pages is taking a hit…
Thanks.

To book any LGV training I suggest the trainee-to-be, visits the training school, meets the head person(s) and has a quick look at the truck BEFORE parting with any money.

Using the site Search facility and putting the words TRAINING AND SUSSEX you wish to train may turn up some recommendations.

Remember to put ‘AND’ in it

Just had an assessment drive with Hills of Plumpton.
6 sessions of 4 hours required including the test, the last session will be the 4 hours for the test.
£1224 + VAT. The test fee is extra.
Is this a fair rate?
Just off to book my theory and HP tests…

A usual 5 day course of 1 to 1 with 4 hours a day and test on day 5 is about £1.000
Your price seems a bit steep to me at over £1,500 in total for 6 days :exclamation: :exclamation:

That is my opinion.
I called another company in Surrey and they have quoted a tad over £900.
Start at 07.30 and finish at 16.00, that is two sharing and 3.5hrs driving per day each with the test on the Friday. I feel that is a fairer price and I quite like the idea of being in and around the truck all day as opposed to just 4 - 5 hours, you can learn a lot watching others and a competitive element is a good motivational force IMO.

This seems like a good price to me.
In my opinion you are better off doing 2-1 because while you are ‘resting’ you can watch the other person and learn from their mistakes etc. Also you should have less breaks, When I did my class C we had loads of T-breaks, I didn’t think anything of it until I had a chat with another company about my C&E. I was paying big money for these T-Breaks. The company I did my C&E with didn’t stop for breaks unless I asked for one.
Good luck whatever you decide.

I found that doing 1 to 1 required more breaks to allow the trainee to rest and absorb what they had just been doing.

Less breaks on 2 to 1 as the one who had been driving could absorb whilst resting in the spare seat.

2 to 1 seemed much more relaxing for both trainees even if their standards were far apart.

Other LGV instructors on here may have different views and their take on this will be well worth considering    (especially those that have the option of either type as some only have 2 seats in their training vehicles - worth asking if views are given  )

Going for another assessment drive tomorrow with another Company.
Closer to where I live and the quote is £1100 at the moment.
I will get out onto the public road tomorrow, I did not today, that is why I was not inspired with confidence from todays assessment, how can they tell how much training you need if they have not taken you out onto public roads
My manouvering the vehicle was OK and I got the range change and hi and low OK on the vehicle and I got the reversing into the bay right on my 3rd attempt, but I was not in a ‘real’ situation at any time.
Feel better about the assessment tomorrow, they thought I was being a bit strange when I asked if I would be allowed out in public…

I am going to go with a company that gives me confidence and is 100% truthful about my ability or lack of, and in the way in which I would like to learn, I see this as an investment and I would like my return to be optimized.

Well, I started my training today in Hastings
Without doubt one of the best days of my life ever, to say that I enjoyed it is an understatement…I abslutely loved it.
1 on 1 training with a really nice instructor in a nice wagon.

Up at 6 got to the yard for 7.
Listened as he went thrrough all the pre- start checks, oil, water, brakes fluid, tyres, bars side and rear, body fixings, lights and the air tanks on the outside, how to tilt the cab.
Inside and check all the dials.
Then off we went with him showing me where we should be on the road, the gears, mirrors etc. All the fiddly bits and peices.
The truck is a 97 MAN 10 Metres with a 320 engine, so very nice with the gearchanges and forgiving thankfully, I messed the gears up for a good hour, gripping the lever instead of just guiding it, then all of a sudden I knew where I was with the lever…Seemed really easy to drive!! I should have realised that this is a warning, I clipped my first kerb…Never mind, carried on with a little more concentration and focus…Then in a busy area with lot`s going on and going for a gap in the traffic, clipped another!..“Slow down and stop being a ■■■■ thinking that you can drive” I said to myself…My instructor laughed in a way that confirmed he was also thinking the same thing
I got my act together and drove with more consideration and thought, planning as I should have been doing before the complacency set in…I was actually listening to the instructor and doing as he said, bit of a first for me

I drove us back to the yard after 4 hours and reversed up to the drag trailer as straight as I could…Got it right after 2 shunts, surprised myself!

All in all a really good day, loved learning how to drive again, amazing how different roads which I know have become!!! I am in awe of how the artic drivers do it on a daily basis and at the same time can`t wait to have a go, I love this, it is the mutts nuts

Bring on tomorrow morning, I will have a real effort sleeping tonight, buzzing like a bar steward at the mo`

If you are intending to go for C+E in the near future I would strongly suggest doing it in an ARTIC and not a W&D.

If you do the C+E in W&D, then book at least one full day for ARTIC training afterwards.

I guess it must be a totally diferent driving style then to W&D, or else you would not have said that…If you could tell me what the differences are I would appreciate it. You are right, I have intended to go for C+E in W&D.
Cheers, att.

Below is just one of many links I found on this subject…
W&D v ARTIC

Well, passed my ‘C’ today.
I started the training about 3 - 4 weeks back, but the truck developed a fault and I only had 1.5 days training and we had to delay the test, I got another one back for today, I was disappointed, but then that is life.
I started out last Wednesday with my training again, this time it was not 1 to 1, it was two up, this I enjoyed much more and made it all much more of a team effort, the other lad was only 21 years of age and he was a nice lad and a bloody good driver, he had his test before me as I am not really a morning person, he also passed, which gave me a nice positive outlook.
I got 7 minors on the test and at one point I thought I had failed when I stalled it on a hill start at a traffic lights junction, I just composed myself, gave myself a rollocking and did it right the next time.
I can`t believe how nervous I was though, like a big ball of steel wool was placed in my guts!
I am now on probation for two years, 6 points or more on my license and I have to take it all over again, so this is enabling me to make my mind up to take my C+E as soon as, so they can run concurrently…And with the CPC aspect coming in next September.

It wasn`t easy to do this, driving trucks is a lot more difficult than I expected it to be.

Thanks to Rog for some very helpful links to knowledge that is required.

Right, off for a nice drink now in the way of celebration.

Err who gave you the false info about the 6 points rule ?
That is for new B licence drivers.

The rules for doing C+E will not change from Sept 2009 - only C (or C1)
