Scania 1st gear start = anger

I drove a 2007 , 18 tonner scania today.

It was a nice wagon large cab, cruise control,cd player, and well kitted out.

But
there was a sign on the window,
“please set of in 1st gear etc…”

Being a 4 over 4 i though sod it i,ll start in 3rd. :sunglasses:
But
I could not rev it till the clutch was fully let out,
even in 1st you couldnt give it a bit of welly till,
you were fully engaged in 1st gear
this doesnt help when your multi dropping around the hills of North Yorkshire. :imp:

Any advice on how to give it some welly ,
In 1st it just seems to half heartedly bite the gear,
then you can even throw it straight in to 5th and your away. :unamused:

Did it occur to you why Scania went to the trouble of printing such a sticker? Use first every time, just get the wheels turning then shift to yr preferred choice. Its not difficult. Ignoring the aformentioned sticker will rapidly reduce clutch life and more than possibly damage the synchros in the gearbox resulting in gearbox failure. You please yr self, personally i wouldn’t want to ring in and announce that the motor needs approx £4000 of repairs

Oh and while i think of it, most modern trucks can have information down loaded to a lap top to show how a driver has treated a truck. Big brother comes in many guises, he could be watching you.

Right Mr Vain maybe i worded it wrong.

But i am simply asking the best way to drive it and if anyone has any tips for me,
I am not looking to go racing around in it.

Our normal fleet are ERF,s ,
but the scania was a rental from Salford Truck Hire,

So no-one in our depot has been of much help ,
because none have experience in driving it.

Am i right in thinking that whilst hill starting
i select 1st and get the biting point,
i then release the hand brake.
and then release the clutch fully.
And have faith in the engine
that i wont need the accelerator till i have to change gear :open_mouth:

Because if i press the accelerator whilst i am clutched in to give it a bit of power.
(to do a hill start when fully laden)
Nothing happens.

I wasnt doing it purposely to ruin the engine,
but was just trying a different method in the hope of getting a more
assured response when trying to do a steep hillstart,
Rather than relying on minimum revs… :frowning:

Has it got a hill-holder wotsit?

I drove a Scania before that had one and until the clutch pedal was up it wouldn’t roll back. Maybe when the clutch is fully engaged you can throttle it, but not before. So don’t worry about rolling back!

Thanks macplaxon,
Now that would make sense,

I didnt roll back,
but i also didnt have the reassurance of a bit of rev power,
so tasted bile a few times on steep hill around North Yorkshire

It was hired as a emergency Friday , so i,m still not over familiar with it.

I suppose if its clear to do so.
I can try and put it in 1st release the handbrake,
and see if the hill holder hold it in place till i engage gear
(covering the brake in case the answer is no :frowning: )

Regardless of ‘Hill Hold’, there is also ‘Idle Away’ which means that as you engage the clutch, the engine management system will raise the revs to prevent stalling.

It’s not uncommon. It’s nothing new. I recently came upon it fitted to a T reg Ford Focus (petrol). Great for reversing in confined spaces. Forget the accelerator and just use the clutch.

Thanks all for your help.

I now can treat the wagon with the respect it deserves.

I found myself panicing and clutching in and out whilst reving,
which nearly ended up with me rolling back.

Cant wait to get back in,
and give her some nursing.
