sat nav

I’m sure it’s on here somewhere, but can somebody advise me on the best sat nav to get with all the relevant truckers info on it? or point me to the relevant posts.
My class C license is due back any day now and I need to go buy a few items, Hi Vis jacket safety boots etc. then a hike around all the agencies.
Thanks in advance
Paul

Sorry all, ignore last post , every thing I need to know is here

Are you just getting very well prepared or am i wrong in thinking that the firm that hires you should provide stuff like satnav in the vehicles?

Just preparing myself m8…don’t really know what to expect at the moment so I’m gearing up for all eventualities. Must remember to buy a truckers atlas as well !

Also go out and get yourself one of these

maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?Mod … 8&doy=18m4

And this will be useful too
maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?Mod … 4&doy=18m4

Disclaimer:
Links provided above have been provided to assist with identifcation only
Maplin are NOT the only suplier of these produce
Other retailers and Truckstops etc. stock these item(S)

Thanks 2xQ

Im afraid your wrong mate. its very rare with them to supply you with the correct address let alone a satnav! :open_mouth:

“Somebody advise me on the best sat nav to get with all the relevant truckers info on it?”

Bad news is , as far as Im aware.
NO current SATNAV comes pre’loaded with Truck relivent database’s

These need to be added later from 3rd party source’s

Suggest, recommend:
That if you pocket can stand the strain

Go for one of the high end model’s (Garmin or Tomtom)
As these are more flexible, and will calucate the route faster
(Realy usefull when you make a wrong turn, or need to avoild a weight limit, low bridge etc.)

Also some high end Garmins can be configered for HGV/Truck)
This setting “Truck” if available
usually only effects the Trip_Time calculation

And I find that on my Garmin 610T,
if set to “Fastest route”
It will generally bring me in via a route which avoilds transiting built up area’s.
(ie, if there is a Byepass/ orbitial road, or close by major road access, it will use it)
My TomTom (go) is less good at this
(so now in the bag, as a standbye. just in case the Garmin Croak’s )

Also the highend models will handle the extra loading (of add-on databases) better
(, i.e they have greater CPU power, and dont slow down under the extra loading)

Also:
Traffic Master, is useful.
But only as a souce of information
As like other sources (i.e Radio Stations, BBC etc)
The data is often out of date.

Q does NOT recomend enabling auto route optimisation using ™ data.

And most important of all, which ever you choose,
Learn how to use it 1st ( unformiliar Truck, plus unformiliar SatNav. is a Bad combination )

And 2nd. Always check the address matches the postcode when you look it up.
Never Never NETHER, Trust the POSTCODE alone (especially when its printed on an invoice)

Example:
Q had one drop Friday, in Hatton:
were not only the postcode was WRONG, ( Not even in Hatton !! )
But also part of the address ( There “Lane” , was infact a “Close”)

Lucky 4 Q, there’s only one “Old Station Yard” Trading Estate. in Hatton

2xQ out

top advise, thanks m8

Ps: forgot to mention

The top end Garmins, come with multiple Vehicle Settings…

These are: Car/ Motorcycle, Pedestrian, Bicycle, Truck , Bus, Emerency, Taxi.
On my 610T

“Truck” becomes “Lorry” when you update the firmware
(as the 610T is a UK only version of the 670 )

Q strongly recommends that you set the MOST apporiate Vehicle type

As some do effect the routing calculaton

for example:
The GPS knows that Bus’s & Taxi’s etc. can legitimately use Bus Lanes
& that:
Emerency vehicles, Pedestrians etc. can transit roads with “No Vehicle Access”

Lorry[Truck] appears to use the same routing anogram as “Car/Motorcycle” 99% of the time
With one major exception, It has a stronger tendancy to avoild built’up area’s.

Enjoy

Have you considered using a PDA. You could then install software of your choice and customise it to meet your demands ie add POI’s, Speed camera database and Low Bridges etc. I use HP 6340 with tom tom 6. I find PDA less bulky than say a tom tom Go and when doing drops I just slip it away out of the sight of thieving scumbags.

just found out about this little beauty snooper.co.uk/snooper-s2000-truckmate.htm

i know im gonna save up for one

My (OLD) 610T is still working fine for now

But the “Snooper S2000 Proline with Truckmate UK & Irl”
Certantly appears worth looking at if it croaks.

Actually GREAT to see a GPS company making a serious effort to provide a Truck Savy Sat’Nat.
