New Variable Speed Limits On M4

On the Welsh news yesterday evening & walesonline.co.uk

THE 50mph speed limit on a stretch of the M4 is to be abandoned in favour of a variable one.

At the moment traffic must stick to 50mph even if the three- lane highway is empty — and average speed cameras watch drivers to make sure they do.

But from March 8th it could be lifted to 70 or set as low as required.

The Assembly Government’s Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, said: “Part of our long-term transport strategy is to encourage future, long-term inward investment, growth and jobs. “To do this we need a road network that runs smoothly.

“The variable speed limit scheme on the M4 will help achieve this commitment by using new technologies to tackle current problems on the road which will in turn deliver economic and social benefits.

“Ultimately, it will improve connectivity for Wales and this is essential to the economy. It will not only make for better travelling now, but will also encourage more sustainable travelling in the future.”

The scheme will affect the stretch of road between the Coldra roundabout J24 and Tredegar House J28. The system will operate similar to the M25.

Take care FM

Those cameras don’t nick you at 58, trust me

What a waste of cash, the ‘tunnel of terror’ does a good enough job at slowing everyone down to 10mph :unamused:
