M6 accident j17/16

saw the aftermath of the accident on the m6 southbound today looked bad an Asda truck hit a Stobart up the arse… looked serious not much left of the asda waggon… does anyone know anymore about what happend and if the driver was ok …

THE M6 motorway was closed for several hours today while fire crews battled to free a lorry driver trapped in his cab after a crash involving two HGVs.

The collision between an Asda truck and an Eddie Stobart lorry, which was carrying grit, happened at 11.10am on the southbound carriageway between junctions 16 and17.

Sandbach resident David Barker, who was driving over the motorway bridge at Betchton shortly after the smash happened, said it occurred under the bridge.

“They’ve spent nearly two hours so far trying to cut the driver out of the cab,” said Mr Barker.

“It’s a massive effort to get him out. There was a small fire underneath the cab of one of the vehicles.”

Fire crews from Sandbach, Holmes Chapel and Kidsgrove were called to the scene.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the driver of one of the vehicles was released after nearly two hours.

“We extracted one male casualty after two hours and it was quite a difficult extraction,” she said.

“We had used three types of cutting equipment and paramedics were in the vehicle at the same time.”

An air ambulance which had been alerted was later stood down and the man was taken to hospital by road.

The extent of the man’s injuries are not yet known.

Cheshire Police closed the M6 southbound carriageway between junction 18 at Holmes Chapel and Junction 16 at Crewe for recovery to take place and for accident investigation officers to complete their work.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said anyone who has any information or who witnessed the incident is advised to call the motorway unit on 0845 458 0000.

as far a i,m aware the driver will be ok,recieved a call from NFT (Asda) today to say there were 2 of our pallets on the trailer en route to Bristol. When I asked about the driver they said all they knew was the driver was in hospital but will be ok

So was this an Asda driver or an NFT driver as they are partners in crime BUT I think it was an Asda driver, whilst I was there Whitefield depot I only ever pulled one Asda trailer in over a year. Still no matter which part of the Co hope the driver is able to make a full recovery and resume work without too much hassle and red tape to cut through.

Maybe one day people will learn running bob tail is no use? Hope hes ok though.

Just heard the driver was from NFT Bristol and has lost both his legs, best wishes to the driver and his family at this horrific time

Something along these lines eh Mr Scottish,

Hoping the driver is ok, after reading greener’s post.

Maybe it should be posted on the above linky, but how does in broad daylight/good conditions with all the VMS etc can a truck hit the vehicle (especially a large stobbies) in front and with the severe damage it must have been a fair speed.

Looks like Mr Barker of Sandbach doesn’t know much because it happened quite a bit before the bridge and finished up under it, (luckily or unluckily for the driver with amount of arses stopping above to try and picture/video it as were the w~~**rs driving past videoing :imp: ) anyway it 'll come out in the wash with the A/I report i suppose.

And once again hope the driver makes a full recovery

Sorry posted after greener update, was hoping it didn’t go that way  .

why has he run into the back of the other wagon do we think !!! ffs leave yourselves somewere to go

so sad the driver lost his legs… but when i went past and saw the damage he was very luck to only loose his legs… could of been alot worse

its amazing what the docs and people do these days with artificual limbs…

get well soon drive

The driver was definetly NOT an NFT Bristol driver. We have no scania’s in our fleet and we’re mainly a Sainsburys depot.

It’s easy to point the finger, but who knows how it happened, yes he hit the Stobart up the arse but do we know if he was following too close or whether the Stobart had just pulled in after overtaking & then for whatever reason slammed the brakes on leaving Mr Asda with nowhere to go? Considering the Asda motors are, from what I’ve seen, limited to 50mph, that could well be the case, Mr Asda could also have been asleep, changing channels on the radio, poncing around with a sat nav, looking at the short skirt on the bird in the car in the middle lane blah blah blah or even driving like an idiot & sitting right up Stobarts arse, whatever the case this is what will happen if you do sit too close, it makes a hell of a mess & luckily it’s ‘only’ his legs he has lost & not his life, worth thinking about the next time you’re sitting too close to someone.

After talking to a driver out of NFT Whitefield who knows the driver of this vehicle, he says the latest update on him is that he has not lost his legs.
One of his legs may have to be amputated. He suffered internal bleeding and is in Jimmys hospital Leeds recovering.

Just to clear this one up the driver was an Asda driver based at Portbury, Bristol.

As far as I’m aware and after talking to another Bristol driver he is doing well and expected to make a full recovery.

Best of luck mate if you get to read this.
