getting started

i have just recently passed my normal driving test and although i know you have to be 21 for the hgv license i’m quite interested in being a driver. i was jus wondering how you actually get in (ie/ do you go to a private company or somthing like a job center or what). help/info will be much appriceated,

look in the yellow pages mate, driving schools for lgv or hgv mate…book your lessons and take your test mate

welcome to trucknet by the way…you will finds loads of good advice on here and loads of friendly people to talk to as well

If you’re under 21, there is a young driver scheme that will get you your first step on the ladder. You need a transport company that takes part in the scheme.
One thing you’ll learn pretty quick, is that companies that regularly advertise in job centres are usually pretty bad ones. Which is why they’re reduced to advertising vacancies there.
You could start with an employment agency, and get some van driving work, which will help you save for your class 2 (cat c), which you need to go for class 1 (cat c+E). Don’t bother with getting a 7.5t licence (cat c1) as it’ll usually cost as much as class 2.

Hi Chris, welcome to TruckNetUK.

I’ve just done a site search, looking for any posts about the Young Driver Scheme, but couldn’t find anything useful. It seems that most people have started their training or are already qualified by the time they find us. I have a feeling that the YDS is run by the City and Guilds organisation because it’s an apprenticeship of sorts. It gets you your class 2 licence and NVQs on day-release at college but I would imagine that you are tied to the company which does your training for some time, about 3 years I think.

There will probably be someone with more definate info’ on here by the W/E, but the info I’ve given you might be enough to get you started on the right road.

All the best,

Hello Chris with an S

Got some sites ere that might be of interest to ya fella  unfortunately i cant find a company of such that operates the scheme, but maybe someone else can help.

Keep us up to date on how things are going Chris. Any info you can give us will help us help someone else in the future.

When you start training, we can give you plenty of pointers and, given the chance, a laugh at your expense :open_mouth: . We have all been there and made similar mistakes, so we’re laughing at ourselves as well :sunglasses:   .
