Hi richofisca,

I’d honestly advise against any pre-study of ADR before you sit the course, especially if you’re a first-timer. The reason for my suggestion is that you won’t know the scope of the course or how deeply to study each subject area.

My honest advice is that you forget about it until the day you actually turn up and take your seat in the classroom. Your instructor will give you as much info as you need and you must also be given some sort of textbook which will be yours to keep. I’d also advise that you take a notebook and a black biro. You’ll also need your photocard and driving licence counterpart, or your old-style paper licence plus an acceptable form of photographic I.D. In order that your ADR certificate doesn’t get delayed, you should ensure that the details on your driving licence are correct and current.

My next tip is that, once you’ve got started on the course, you shouldn’t hesitate to ask a question if you don’t understand something.

It’s no good doing what most people do, which is waiting until the exams to find out that you still don’t know. :grimacing:

If you get stuck, I’ll be here for you.

Hi berewic, I’d be happy to post some links.
If you give your location and the distance you’re prepared to travel, it would help to save me some time.

Cheers Diesel.

Living in Oxford.
Willing to travel■■? Not sure. Whatever it takes I suppose, but as near as poss’.
Looking at up-to and including Tanks.

Hi berewick, It seems that you’re not well served in your area for ADR training providers… :frowning:

Here are two within travelling distance, I’ve no info on them one way or the other, so they’re in no particular order.

I do advise that, for the purpose of getting accurate info to make your decision, you specifically ask providers about VAT and exam fees, because not all providers mention these at the time you ask their prices.
:open_mouth: That saves nasty surprises later on. :grimacing:

I hope this helps.

Thanks Diesel.
I have just phoned the man at Banbury and they do from nothing to everything on Tanks except explosives and radioactive. He said it’s a 5 day course including the exam. He couldn’t come up with any prices as the lady who does prices has gone home already, (thc, part timers). So he’s going to get her to phone me tomorrow.

I’m going to wait and see before phoning Slough.

Hi berewic, I’m glad you mentioned the bit about tanks…
You can optionally leave out the packages part of the course if you like and that might save you approx £100, cos that has its own separate exam. It would also leave you with some spare time on (usually) the Tuesday afternoon of the course.

Mind you, if you do the packages module, you’ll be giving yourself two options for employment afterwards, but I’d stress that it IS your choice.

I’d also advise that you read page 3 of the ADR ‘sticky’ in the H&S forum, where I’ve explained about the different exam ‘routes’ that providers can use. You may save some money if you do that.

I hope that helps.

No-one got back to me from PTF on Friday so I got back to them Monday. The price for the full monty (except explosives & radioactive) is £501 + vat. The exams are £20 each. The lady sure could talk but couldn’t give a definite date on when a course would be available. There might be one in April in Hemel Hempstead and there might be one in Banbury in May.

Haven’t contacted Circle Express yet, Still thinking about shelling out that kind of cash considering I’m not working. The problem is, many jobs I see and would be interested in are demanding ADR.

Where, or what, is the H & S forum?

Hi berewic, I’ve got no info on this company apart from the fact that they’re an authorised ADR provider.
All the providers that I work for usually plan and notify SQA about their intention to run an ADR course approx a month in advance. I’m guessing here, but I’d say from my experience that it might be that PTF do things slightly differently. It does seem a little unorthodox for them not to know the next proposed course dates though…

In my area, we have quite a number of providers so the prices around here are usually somewhat cheaper than what you’ve been quoted. From my look at the authorised providers in your area, it seems that there’s not much competition. :frowning:

Here’s a link to it, but I’ll admit that I could have been more accurate when I gave you that title. Sorry about that.

I’m reassessing my options now. I’ll probably go for “up-to” tanks and worry about the rest later. Cheaper option.

I looked up SQA on google and found a link giving training sight locations all over the country, plus a load of other useful stuff.

Hi berewic, If you’re reassessing, and looking for cheaper options, then you might consider the following:

Let’s suppose that you wanted to work for a firm that delivers gas in cylinders…
You would need a minimum of Core, packages and gases (UN Class 2.)

If you wanted to work for a firm that delivers central heating oil…
You would need Core, tanks and flammable liquids (UN Class 3)

There are many possible permutations to suit your requirements, but the average ‘general’ ADR course is usually Core, packeages and UN Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 &9.
Doing the course in that way leaves out the expensive explosives (UN Class 1) and radioactives (UN Class 7) modules.
The tanker module is a ‘stand-alone’ module and you can add that at any time you like.

I hope this helps.

That’s what I’ll go for then. The type of work I’m after is general haulage. Most ADR stuff will come in groupage and it could be anything. I don’t want to specialise, unless I see some Euro tanker jobs, just want a ticket to work. Reading the trim cards, as long as you don’t eat, drink, swim in it, sleep with it or set fire to it, your OK :open_mouth: but I expect the course will be more complicated than that.

Hi berewic, Then you might be pleasantly surprised when you get to the classroom.

The ADR course is for vehicle drivers, so that’s the main thrust of the required knowledge.
You’ll also be given an overview of the responsibilities of the other participants in the transport chain eg. the consignor, the carrier and the consignee. After that, you’ll have the knowledge to be able to spot if/when one of them tries to get you to do something illegal, and then you can decide whether you want to go along with their request.

Knowledge is power. :grimacing:

Good luck to you mate, and please don’t forget that I’ll be here if you get stuck.
