Yorkshire Water Tankers And The 1995 Drought

Stanfield:
Went over to Sowerby Bridge today and Booth Wood Reservoir is almost empty again Paul.

That’s normal this time of year, use it during the Summer and fill it during the Winter.

Ward Brothers of Huddersfield operated this 401 Series Seddon Atkinson 6x2 tractor unit and tanker on the Yorkshire Water job in 1995.

Pictured here on the M62 Hartshead Moor Services it was originally new to Showerings of Shepton Mallet.

While living in Belgium I came back to Yorkshire on a family visit for a few weeks. An old boss(Norman Lewis)rang me up by chance and I ended up doing about a month on nights leading water from near Howden to above Scammonden. It around 2 mins to fill the tank with 20 tons or so of water and not much longer to unload it.You had to be quick to open the lid before the tank was sucked flat.I also recall that there were many residents of Outlane village who complained about noise and speeding lorries 24 hrs.a dayPolice and company speed checks were frequent.I understand that there were hardly any lorry drivers nicked but almost every villager was.I’ll bet that the village chip shop never made as much money as then either.
