i wouldnt know how magnets work away down near the south pole.
ive only made it as fas as saudi a few times years ago,but no magnets needed, just a flick of the wrist for the card, and a new one in the slot once back near civilisation did the trick.
id have thought just removing the thing and binning it would suffice?
handy wee hole to put something useful in like a cb,or your chits.

An update!

Got it into Out of Scope mode fine, but the dash still illuminates like attached when it’s turned on - any ideas?

If you press “ok” on the Tacho unit does that not clear that warning? I may of course be wrong as it’s been an awfully long time since I drove more than 10 hours with no card in

Pull the unit out of the dash or where ever it is located and just simply unscrew the wiring loom from the back of the unit. Simples.

You can’t just do that, the vehicle takes its road speed info off the tacho head it would cause numerous faults and the speedo wouldn’t work.

On another note…that’s a bright moon for 1:52am

Was it lit like that before you set it to out of scope? Set it to the bed sign and leave it over night that should clear the warning. Then you’ll need to clock up 4.5 hours of driving to see if it reappears.

One of these is what you need. Although you will need your k/w factor etc programmed into it before delivery as I’d imagine no one will be able to program it in your neck of the woods.

Update:
I didn’t get a chance to remove the error before it went into service to do all the other things, so I asked them to have a crack at disabling it. They didn’t make any progress I’m told.

I will try put it to rest mode overnight tonight and see how it goes, although I don’t know if I can rack up 4.5 hours of driving to test(is it enough to leave the vehicle idling?)

The dummy VDO head might be a great option! Do you just unplug the old one and install the new?

Also, when calibration time comes, does the tachograph complain about that, regardless of out of scope?

Cheers for everyone’s help! I’m incredibly grateful.

It is a case of just plugging it in but it will need programming with your k/w factor, chassis number etc before hand ( there should be a plaque on the vehicle with these details on). If you contact either time instruments or skillray in the U.K and explain your predicament they should be able to sort you out.

Black felt tipped pen.

Managed to find an outfit which is the NZ distributor for an emulator - about 250GBP installed - which should cure the tachograph issue. Thanks for the heads up guys, I would not have known to go down this track if I didn’t get the link above.

Of course, the chap linked above wanted 500 pounds(told me to ignore the website pricing) so that was a bit of a laugh. But it did set me down the right path!

Id speak to Warberers. All of their drivers know how to disable a tacho without messing about with the brakes!

Interesting topic though, I’d suppose the real companies to contact would be the likes of MM Aquisitions at Preston or Walker Movements near Loughborough who specialise in flogging our old Knackers to Africa and the like. They should know how to sort this without wrecking the truck.

There is a factory near Budapest dedicated to manufacturing “black boxes” to disable digi-tacho without messing up truck electrics.
Was told EVERY truck running in Hungary/Romania has one fitted!!!

Should be able to find them on Google.

You cannot just rip it out as the speed limiter and a lot of other functions are linked to the tachograph.
Also if not calibrated and serviced the “internal” battery dies and gives above problems.
The easiest is to use a “blind” tachohead as used on “plant” or exempt vehicles.
If you order it from VDO dealer in the UK they can program the K factor in.

I’m pleased that you seem to have found a solution Neongreen, but I have only just noticed this thread and would have made the following observation.

I do 80,000 kms a year all round Europe in my car and, although I don’t legally need to, I keep more or less to the same restrictions as I had to when driving a wagon, and I would love to have a tacho installed. With no worries about legal restrictions to trip me up it would nevertheless serve as evidence of innocence if I ever needed it. My excellent mechanic, who is a time served truck electronics man, said I can have one, but at a price, and where the hell would I put it?

So, in your situation, where there is no legal requirement, why not try to buy a job lot of cards from the UK, and use it in a defensive mode?

Tachographs are being replaced with the simulators, and it’s going well! Now I’ve got a rapidly growing stack of old tachographs, which I may resell. Anyone know someone in the UK who is interested in old tachographs?

Easy to suggest buying a box lot of cards, but that seems neigh on impossible, and our work time restrictions are very different to the UK ones. This would double the administrative workload for the drivers assuming you could get the cards…

Hi Neongreen. I’m in NZ with an imported DAFLF45 and the battery of my tacho has run down causing my DAF to go into “very upset” mode. Still runs fine but lots of warnings and odometer wont work so cant get my COF. I was wondering if I could replace my tacho with one of your old ones. Or any comments about installing the simulator. Is it easy or do they have to be pre-programmed. The problem is finding someone in the know. I’m in Northland but will travel anywhere to get it sorted by someone who knows what they are doing. I have sourced a new tacho battery - but not sure if the unit will work without being reset by a service centre. Would really appreciate your comments.

UPDATE: Found an NZ supplier who will send me a simulator head unit if I give him the K/W/L Factors from the label on the door Pillar. The truck was resprayed before it was exported to NZ and seems they have removed that label. How else can I find my K/W/L values ? Do you have any ideas ?
