Stobart F1 job advert

Pat Hasler:
As someone who has had lot’s to do with F1 over the years and the last 3 years of UK work driving around setting up hospitality units and F1 promotion I can tell you that the F1 team workers including the teams own transporter drivers totally hate all Stobart drivers with a vengeance so I wouldn’t recommend even considering an application to do F1 work with them, as with all the work they steal buy cutting rates and destroying good jobs they are slowly destroying the job. F1 transporter drivers are a part of the team and also pit workers, it’s a great job and nobody wants to be treated like a skivvy for pittance wages. Apply by all means but be prepared to be ‘Sent to Coventry’ by everyone else involved.
You really like F1 and want to drive for a team, apply with the team and not Stobarts.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you there Pat, :frowning: when Stobarts appeared on the F1 scene there were some problems and resentment, but things seem to have settled down now.

I know a lot of the team at Mercedes and some of the Pirelli lads (who used to work for Bridgestone when I was on GP2) and they get on ok with the Stobart drivers, now the dreamers and superstars have been weeded out and it’s only the grafters left.

As for taking over the paddock, I think Stobarts appeared with Mercedes F1 around 2009 and 9 years later as far as I know they do the transport for 2 race teams, one of which they only got back again this year, Pirelli, the FIA and I’m not sure if they also do transport for FOM, so hardly taking over the paddock and plenty of other sub-contractors doing similar work.

It’s been many years since those who drove the F1 Transporters also worked as part of the race team and that changed long before Stobarts got involved, almost all of the transporter drivers are now part-time, only working on the circuit during the European race season and for a bit of Air Freight, they are either hired directly by the team or through various specialist agencies, who supply drivers to motorsport and event companies, so if you really want to drive a truck for an F1 team it would be pointless applying directly to the team, except maybe Ferrari, but that’s probably pointless as well. and if you want a race team job, you normally would need experience at either GP2, World Series, or LMP1 or LMP2 to get a look in.

A lad I know does the European work and did the training for what they call fly bys at Christmas, he’s on for red bull and loves it… told me a few stories about stobarts and I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole!

Afaik, stobbies only have pirelli, williams and as muckles says mercedes but itll be interesting come barcelona as dhl also have a lot to do with mercedes.

F1 truck movements are all subbed out. So applying direct to teams wont get you anywhere, its all agencys, and/or specialist agencys.

The truckies, or garage technicians as were now known rarely get to drive the trucks, heck most of the guys doing truckie jobs dont even have a truck license.

Double man drivers tend to be casual/ part time only required for back to back races in Europe.
Extra races added this year, these are the back to back trips this year, France - Austria, Austria - UK, Germany - Hungary & Belgium - Italy.
Varies from team to team, if driving the garage, fly into venue from UK on Saturday, in hotel until race finishes, about midnight get to circuit and drive to destination overnight. Into hotel and then fly back to UK.
If driving the hospitality buildings, fly in on Sunday, night in hotel, pick vehicles up from circuit on Monday mid day, drive overnight to venue, night in hotel fly back to UK.

A lot of teams also have requirements for van drivers, shuttling crew and even engines about.
All the teams moan about trip back to UK, as it’s the longest and logistics of Tunnel/ferry crossing.
I believe McLaren are the only ones who do their own transport, article on Motortranport about low mileage Volvos for sale.
I think a UK company does the hospitality buildings for Ferrari.

Bloody fantastic wage when you’re doing 15hr shifts to get the stuff to where it needs to be,a MASSIVE £8.46ph…where the hell do I sign up?!!

Don’t forget it’s double manned so you could actually be doing 21 hours

Pretty much st standard for the race trucks, they wont do more then 20k kms a year nornally and will be swapped out every 2/3 years. Unless your nearer the back of the grid.

Ferrari hospitality and motorhome is done by austrians.

Phillip morris hospitality is done by english, procar i think, they also do ducati.

Double man is pretty much perfectly described as above. No one will be shuttling engines about, and very rarely will it be crew.

The teams move hundreds of people, 50 odd tons worth of freight around the world and run trucks because they have to, and put pretty much everyone to shame when it comes to efficientcy

Seems to fit the schedule I had last year for a double drive from Spa to Monza.

Saturday morning Taxi to Station, Train to St Pancras, Eurostar to Brussels, put up in Hotel,
Sunday get local train to Verviers, met by one of the regular drivers, go to house where they’d been staying for the week, watch Grand Prix on telly, have a siesta.
Sunday Evening arrive at circuit, help load, double man to Monza.
Monday get to Monza, taxi to hotel near airport.
Tuesday Morning fly back to UK, collected from airport go back home.
4 days pay, all expenses paid for including meals.

Just applied, but they turned me down because i asked if it was a step towards being an F1 Driver. Sound great if your interested in that way of life, but you wont get rich on the wages…but with no look at the racing itself, its just work work and more work with a bit of rest in between.

I did a spell for a mate on BSB and never worked so hard in my life and didn’t see any racing either. The closest I got was the pit wall with a riders board, the rest of the time it was packing, unpacking, cleaning, drying, polishing, fetching, carrying and pushing. Can’t even relax at night as you are fending off trophy hunters and naked women. [emoji23]

Yeah that sounds absurd.

Where do I apply? :grimacing:

Doesn’t sound a great gig IMO.

Plus you don’t get a tang spec V8 so I’m out.

Exactly! Low wages. Hard work. Long days. Don’t get to see the racing…what’s the attraction exactly?
Just more exploitation of the gullible.

I would think so, the adverts always seem to dangle a carrot of “You’ll get to see the racing” yet most descriptions from people who’ve done it say differently.

Also driving from Spa to Monza seems to be the cream, hardly a special run I do better than that every trip.

You obviuosly didn’t bother reading the advert, as they’ve made a point of saying you won’t see any of the racing. It’s also not hard work or long hours as it’s a drivng only job not a set-up ot pack down job, most of the time will be taken up with all the faff of flying to and from the circuit.

If you do better runs each week, that’s great, don’t apply, but as I said in the initial post, it might interest somebody.

I hear your pain…
Much like Lukes when he pointed to an insurance policy that might be of benefit to some, and ended up getting slagged off because some found better deals elsewhere! Do some people ask for their money back from The National Lottery, when they are told the ticket that could have won them a fortune, didnt actually win?

Yep, :frowning: posted it as though I realised that most people wouldn’t give it a second look, I thought it might interest somebody.
The advert makes no bones about what’s expected and doesn’t try and glamorise the job and if it like when I did a double drive from Spa to Monza last year, (not for Stobarts and for more than £127 a day,) the job took 4 days in total for about 6 hours driving.

At least youll get some exotic name on your truck.

Very smart new units at mercs though.

Must be all out war between schenker and stobratski office bods, especially seeing as one of them is a team sponsor.

What nationality plate on those units? BG? Not clear on my phone screen.
