Shipping out of and into Poole

Buzzer:
Hi Richard hope you and Angie are keeping well, I never knew you were a medical expert as well as taking up your position at the Bar but one learns something every day. On the above mentioned John Glance IIRC he was of American descendance, remember a maroon F88/9 he had saw him in TIP’s yard in West Quay road one day and from memory he liked to ship out on a Friday to Italy with his ski’s on the roof rack, then he stopped off in the Aosta valley for the weekend, up on the ski lift for some rar, mind you Micky Long used to do that but he never had any ski’s he just went up to get ■■■■■■■ Mary Hopkins rides again, Buzzer

Hi John,

Thanks we are keeping safe thanks, hope you and The Boss are taking care. You are right about John Glance I think his Father had travelled around with his job, and he liked his skiing,I’ve seen Kevin take a couple of tilt boards out of the trailer and come down Mt Blanc on them tied to his feet !

Regards
Richard

MaggieD:
Hi Geoff,
Due to the lockdown and for something better to do since I was turned down by the NHS volunteer scheme -they’ve got enough gynaecologist’s apparently, but I’m waiting to hear back from the breast clinic !

I have been trawling through some old photos and came across this, back on page 39 you put a pic of it on, a chap called John Glance had it when this was taken back in 1980,I think it was in Tarragona.

Regards
Richard

Hi Richard I am sorry that you got turned down for an NHS position, but I am sure the Boss would rather have you in her sight in these trying times. There is one thing for sure there is nothing wrong with your eyesight, to remember the maroon Volvo. I do vaguely remember a John Glance from way back. The pic I posted was when a chap I drove for had it called Barry Davis. I hope that you and the Boss stay safe in these unusual times. All the Best Geoff

I recall sitting in the drivers’ mess on the Coutances in the 70s when we all were tipped out of seats. The ship wasn’t travelling too fast but it rammed the linkspan. The next sound we heard was the Chief Engineer’s boots stomping up from the bridge to the wheelhouse followed by a lot of shouting.I learnt a few new french words that day. There was a definite kink in the ship’s bow.

It did indeed “Gidders” The Coutances lost engine power in 1979.

Sorry to hear that Lance I remember seeing his trucks about a lot not just in Poole.
RIP Stuart Taylor

Baldrick 1953 , I remember Merve the Swerve , I think he was from Bath ? A thoroughly decent bloke I knew on Portuguese runs , he once rolled over his truck and since then securely stowed away the bottle jacks and other objects that hurt if they hit your head .RIP.

Hi toby1234abc Merv did come from Bath he was often called the Mayor of Bath Affectionately.
Was the accident you refer to when he slid down the road on his windscreen at Spirito Sancti or
a different one.He was a Great friend to me and many more who knew him.
He is going to be laid to rest at 1130 on the 4th of May so raise a glass to him then for old times.
RIP Merv the Swerve.

I am not sure which accident that Merve was referring to when he told me , sorry I can’t be more specific.

Didn’t he have a New Years Eve accident? After leaving the “Vigilana?”

Yes that’s right he did Alan that’s the one I was on about at Spirito Sancti . I am not sure about the one toby1234 was talking about. I think he was driving for Hornigolds at the time he left the Vegellana. How’s your restoration going, keep you busy for a while no doubt. I can’t wait to go to the Porkers again if they ever open again. Stay safe mate see you soon hopefully.Geoff

Busy? I’m working hard keeping the UK stocked with essential supplies.
Work is peculiar* this year, but we’re as busy as ever.
.
.

  • does that qualify as an understatement?

Franglais I am sorry mate I got you mixed up with another mate of mine. I am glad that you’re busy as I am on my fourth week of Furlough and have no idea when it’s going to end. Anyway you keep up the good work and stay safe.Regards Geoff

Hi Geoff…
A couple of nice pics of Merv you posted…
I remember Kelvin doing a few trips in the early days but I think he stayed home on the spanner’s later on and had a couple of drivers?
Foggy memories now but I seem to recall that Merv had a transcon that was an orangey colour at one time…
Like a say foggy memories of some great times .
All the best… Baldrick.
