PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Hi Dean.
I would hazard a guess at that Merc artic loaded with steel being one of Consolidated Land Services from Scunthorpe. They ran a lot of those type Mercs out of BSC on steel work.

Hi Dean a lovely mixture of photos on here again top stuff just having a quick catch and looking through this thread .Ps buddy that Scammell routeman tipper was brand new to ARC it was based at frome works in somerset i can see were you are coming from with your comment above with that cab colour which does make it look a blue circle motor Many thanks for posting all the great photos and articles today Regards Daz

Thanks for confirming about the Routeman Daz. The colour may have been something to do with the photo being stored
for 40 odd years before Paul Gee cleaned it up.

Some foreign motors either heading to or from Truckline,Poole.

MAHE DAF were regulars through Poole. Anyone know where they were from in France ?

7

Another regular through Poole was OTA. Anyone know what OTA stands for and are they finished as cant
remeber seeing one for years. Were they owner drivers on here as i seem to remember there were alot
with Ford Transcontinentals on OTA ■■

Hello Dean, superb photos as always. OTA and Le Calvez were both acquired by Norbert Dentressangle Group in the mid 90’s. If I recall OTA stood for Ouest Transportes Angleterre and specialised in Normandy/ Brittany exports into the western UK, quite a few owner ops on both sides of the channel. RABA were out of Zagreb and I tipped ICI paint there in the late eighties before the civil war. Trailer was likely an intermodal job given the roof line, as they used the train in Germany a wee bit. I also wouldn’t be surprised if that lead axle on the trailer was neither lift nor steer as the cash was running low for the Yugos even pre war. Zurel were owned by a gold merchant from Amsterdam, rumour was that the whole thing was a sideline/ tax write off. The early trucks did indeed have gold leaf in the lettering.

Thanks for the information about OTA ,never knew what the intials stood for. Your right about them loading alot out of Normandy
and Brittany and used to bring loads of vegtables through Poole. Intresting comments about the RABA and Zurel.Good stuff chap.

Fairly certain i have something on the German trains somewhere but not scanned.

Heres a bit about the French Kangaroo system from 1965. Nice to see Dyson trailers mentioned.

Morning Dean.
Wasn’t their another French haulier from Le Havre with the initials TOE that used Poole? I believe it stood for Transportes l’Ouest Europeen. Also I think Mesguen used Poole they ran fridges and specialized in fish transport,we had a weekly delivery off them into Maltby and the driver always wore a French Foreign Legion hat - the warehouse lads used to take the ■■■■ out of him from a distance as he were a big feller.   From memory their trailers had Roscoff-Poole-Manchester plus more down the sides.

TOE from Dieppe Chris, as pointed out in Dean’s photo (constantly amazed at the chap’s library!). Ran mainly unaccompanied unit loads and used Newhaven a lot as well as Poole and Pompey.

A fine selection, Dean! I lived in West Wales for a few years, and couldn’t go far in Wales without coming across a Mansell motor! For a little while, I lived only a short drive from their depot too.

 I can just make out the EE Grimsby reg plate now and also the address format. For some reason I could not get a larger image when first posted. It’s a firm I remember well as I used the A18 a lot when on tanker work in 70s,they carried wide loads of plate and you had to watch for them at Keadby Bridge where it were a bit narrow, and also a disused railway bridge near Two Rivers Cafe. They did run AECs in 60s IIRC but I don’t recall any in 70s.

Mesguen used Poole mainly as they had a transport office in the docks and last time i was in Cherbourg (2015) they had a
depot just outside the docks so i assume its still there.

I imagine that ERF was taken before they become a Volvo dealer “MT”, as i dont recall ever seeing anything but Volvo in there fleet ?

I wonder how many of there old F7’s are rusting away in there yard or were they sold ? :unamused:

Like you say “Camion Stew” most of there traffic was unaccompanied. If there is anything in particular you are looking for let
me know and if i have it scanned i will pop it on. I often have stuff people mention but if its not scanned trying to find it is
like a needle in a haystack in my collection.

Heres another “TOE” trailer being pulled by a subbie.
