HRS:
HOLLIS transport started trading just south of reading on a small farm unit.
Moved into Reading with a new contract and bought 3 little F86 tractors from me, big step up from the D800 range.
Not to many years later got gobbled up by a big fish, Q&A if I remember right. wow that pic brought back a few memories, thanks Dean.

Hollis had a Leyland Terrier with a Luton body which we serviced, it had water in the sump (the usual liner seal problem, though not so common on the 98 series engines with twin seals in the block instead of a single one like the older 5.1/5.7 engines) so I fitted new liners etc. A few days later it came back with water in the oil again! Thinking I had split a seal it was stripped again but nothing visual was found. So it was rebuilt again but the sump was left off and sure enough water was weeping slowly from a liner. Took it apart yet again and a torch and mirror showed a blowhole actually in the seal groove in the block casting. A new short engine cured it! In all my years working on BMC wet liner engines that was the only such case I came across.

I always wondered what happened to Durhams,now I know. Bob Durham had a big fleet at one time doing a lot of work for ICI. They won “Haulier of the year” sometime in the 70s. They took over Sandersons of Middlesborough who ran some trunks to Lichfield changing over with S Protheroe from Swansea.

Hi Chris, yes my father and uncles all drove for Sandersons and as you rightly said night trunks to Newport and changeovers with S Protheroe at Lichfield, also a changeover at West Bromwich. PD group IIRC had a Mercedes Benz franchise hence the Mercedes wagon, another firm from Scunthorpe area that you may remember was Consolidated Land Services who were also part of the group.

I remember Consolidated Land Services very well,they were on Grange Lane Scunthorpe,did a lot of steel,long loads. They were formed by amalgamating North Lincs Haulage and H and L from Workington.Tanker Hire was also part of CLS,they did a bit of work for A E Evans in winter.

Bulmers were originally from Malton North Yorkshire ended up with a depot in Middlesbrough, drove for them part time always had good kit, had up to 100 units then went bust couple of years ago. This picture taken parked up in Workington port did a lot of work in and out of Eastmans Workington.

The Tilcon Foden S39 in Metalairs advert was probably one of two destined for our Ballidon quarry in Derbyshire Dean as they had the smaller tanks? We had TRB 132K and TRA 243K driven by Harry Glover and Ian Slater, both long gone alas. I did several trips to Metalair at Sutton Bridge to either collect brand new tankers or a new chassis which had the old tanks removed from the previous trucks refurbished. They had two mobile fitters, one (Rick) lived locally to the factory and was sadly killed in a road accident and the other (Steve I think??) was also a local lad but was based in Cheshire. Both did work at our quarry converting the tanks from probe to pad discharge which took a couple of days work for each one. Thank’s for posting, and have a Good Christmas.

Ah! Ken Miller senior who I knew via my Pal Mail Woodhouse Snr. The name conjured up a memory from 1975 when I sold Ken two Borderers MEC 98K & NEC 260K and, so I was told, they both ended up at Leyland Paints running between their manufacturing plant and their warehouse. Very decent bloke to deal with Ken Snr and I believe it was Ken Junior ( or “young Ken”) that would run the haulage business but I never met him. Cheers Dennis.
