Morning John,
I’m sure one of those trailers ended up round the Black Country, can remember it in a yard in Kingswinford, Cheer’s Pete

MOLO had a yard at Nursling on the outskirts of Southampton shared with Rentco trailer rentals, the trailer on the transcon is a flat PSK which had twistlocks for containers not uncommon back in the day, you could lay your sheets down on the bed and drop a container over them then you could do a rope & sheet load home, Buzzer.

Very true Harvey…and just like the Gardner when the cause of a long tailback on a hill was identified it would be a F86,

Hi Buzzer,

I had forgotten all about the cut out in the front of a 40’ box, when at Humber McVeigh’s we shifted a lot of Seatrain containers to both Felixstowe and Greenock, and as you rightly said if you didn’t get an empty box to return, you could use your sheets for a return load from elsewhere!

Must admit Harvey i havent looked at that brochure for a long time and it brought back some happy memories as a kid in my grandads six wheeler which was a quick little motor. I can also remember pulling the rack out on the pump on very cold mornings. I really rated them, cracking little comfortable motors.

The F86 was never gonna be quick on hills in artic form like you say “gingefold” but like most manufacturers they built the smaller powered artics like Leyland,Scania etc as there was
obviously a place in the market for them. Mind you as a gaffers motor the payload was
possibly the best in the 32 ton market ■■ If not it would be very close to the top. I seem
to remember the payload with a flat bed was something like 22 tons !!

Talking about tailbacks on hills etc. Back in the 1970s,most trucks were slow on hills but the other thingthat sticks in your mind was the black smoke they used to chuck out even just pulling away
from a junction.

Hi Dean.

There is a company from Stockport called Insituform who specialise in drain clearance, they have some wagons over here in the Isle of Man.They did have a Volvo F6 four wheeler tanker rented from TIP as is the one in the photo. IIRC TIP had a depot at Knottingley and Wincanton rented some of their 26 pallet tri-axle fridge sheds off them.
This was one of TIP’s sheds at Maltby, their fridge men were called out regularly to fix faults on em. My mate was shunting one on a sunday and fridge battery was flat so he decided to jump start it,he plugged leads onto 24v socket ont Terberg instead of 12v and it went with a rayt bang, blew battery to bits, luckily he wasn’t hurt. Our office called TIP out and fitter came, put a battery in and never said owt - good job we knew him.
