oiltreader:
Unusual cab on this 1959 Austin, what do you reckon it was before this cab was fitted, I doubt it would have left the factory with just a rad grille, guesses, ideas■■?.

Hi Oilteader,

It could have been supplied ex works as a chassis/scuttle and then had a coach built cab fitted. Several pantechnicns were built on chassis/scuttles about that time. I know it would be 5 years later, but in 1964 we had a FG supplied as chassis/scuttle.

Thanks for your excellent photos

Graveyard USA style, apart from the tyres the motors are in goodish nick, down to aluminium and desert dry conditions I guess.

Well you learn something new every day. I used to live in Oz and saw many TNT wagons but always in my memory it was Thomas Nationwide Transport. The founder, Ken Thomas, I think sold out lock stock and barrel before the big expansion to Europe came.

But I could be wrong. :unamused:

This was taken under Newcastle Tyne Bridge, Regards Larry.

Some in this country think it means Today Not Tomorrow, amazing how quickly these things get around! Here’s another Oz TNT with an export Leyland Comet. Franky.

I was once told years ago that Bill Knowles, of Knowles Transport Ramsbottom was the founder of TNT Transport Ltd, ? Regards Larry.

I may be wrong but I think TNT bought Inter-County Express from Rochdale to get a foothold in the parcels market in the UK

It was definitely Ken Thomas who was the founder of TNT express in Australia Larry. In the early days of their activity in the UK they took over Inter county express & Knowles vanlines which may be where your friend Bill Knowles comes into the frame. The Inter county express stayed on the vehicles for some time along with the TNT stickers.

The TNT depot I knew was in Station road in Ramsbottom with another one just down the road a bit but I can’t recall the name of that one now but it may have been called Stubbins. TNT used it as a main garage & paint shop for all the new motors when I was with them. That’s no doubt changed now almost everything comes off the line painted.

I once sat through a video of the firm & it was very interesting to watch how the company grew to become a global name with planes, trains & even ships in its colours. It was an interesting firm to work for & I met some lovely people during the 9+ years I was with them.
