M5 Fatal smash

I was involved with the resurfacing after this.
The van was the ■■■■■■ vehicle for the wide load.
The driver of the wide load obviously in bits as he knew the deceased.
The sixty year old driver of the artic escaped with cuts and bruises even though the boom of the excavator came through the windscreen.
RIP and thoughts with family and friends.

[zb] horrendous.

Out of interest, what was the chemicals spilt? I assumed diesel at first but then I don’t think it would of required resurfacing work?

I thought maybe the van was carrying ADR but if your saying it was ■■■■■■, maybe not.

I always find things like this put things into perspective when your stuck in traffic, not knowing the reason ahead. Not important that your delayed when families are being put through this ordeal

We resurfaced all four lanes.
As far as I know it was diesel.

Any info as to the cause yet?

If only all the people who jump inbetween trucks in traffic would see this, heart goes out to the driver and his family… imagine seeing that was how you’re dad/son/brother went… jeez :frowning:

It was an ■■■■■■ vehicle. But I understand your logic - it still wouldn’t stop plonkers doing idiotic things.

A few shifts ago I had someone slam his brakes on after going up the hard shoulder because I couldn’t let him off a slip road (traffic was to my left). If I’d have been tired, distracted or just as agressive as him It wouldn’t have ended well. If someone had been travelling close behind me then it probably wouldn’t have ended well for them either.

I think the moral of the story is we should all leave bigger gaps. Always wonder why some truck drivers want to travel so close behind other trucks on the motorway. If they are OD’s and trying to save fuel I can kind of get it, but when you are pulling a load for some generic haulier why risk it?

Yeah I read it was a ■■■■■■ vehicle, can’t think of a worse place to be than inbetween two trucks… I have seen some nasty pictures of crashes and that by far tops them all, RIP chap

I knew the crash was bad, but I think its one of the worse I seen. Feel very sorry for everyone involved

You have a strange logic :open_mouth:

Your last bit says it all really but in reality some think it will never happen to them. So sad for all involved in these mostly unnecessary accidents.

If they are OD’s and trying to save fuel I can kind of get it,

REALLY■■? Why put peoples lives at risk just to save fuel■■? CRAZY

Just what I thought when reading that.
I certainly can’t ‘‘kind of get it’’ nor know anybody who does it tbh.

Why is that a strange logic?? People need educating on what can happen… some people are lacking something upstairs, you being one of them I think :unamused:

I often find myself on a motorway/dc gently creeping up to the lorry in front and planning my overtake when a car overtakes me and promptly pulls in between us when there are no exits for miles. I wonder why you would willingly put yourself in a place of obvious danger? Perhaps it’s not obvious to them is my only answer.

Thoughts with all that knew the escorting van driver

I can think of a few ways this could have happened

I wish they would introduce 2 second gap cameras with pre 5 second video footage so many incidents could be avoided

Exactly, car drivers don’t realise what can happen… especially sat in stationary traffic and you leave a gap inbetween you and a lorry infront “oh look he’s left me a gap that’s nice of him” then you get arse ended and go over the top of them!

It’s not a nice picture of a accident, as i said earlier thats the worst i have seen. It hits home what can happen though.

theres me thinking that being an ■■■■■■ driver was easy work, never occurred to me how dangerous it can be until I saw this, poor guy, rip.

This happened right on the junction between the exit and entry slip roads, I wonder if traffic were slowing down or had come to a stop due to the roadworks the next junction up for the M5/M42 split and the driver at the back wasn’t concentrating or you’ve had some idiot force their way on to the motorway off the entry slip to beat the truck with the abnormal load causing him to slam on and the van then the truck at the back has gone stright in to the back of them at near enough full speed. Absolutely tragic for all involved including the emergency services and RIP to the person just out doing his job. It’s more than likely that pic has been took not long after it happened and the poor bloke is still actually inside the van in this pic, well what’s left of him

It’s not unusual for the vehicle to be removed to a safe and controlled site in order for the person to be extracted in horrific incidents like this.

Recall speaking to a customer in Bristol who’s company had to recover a car that had been flattened by a rolled over container truck. The fire service and police had to carefully chip away at what was left of the car in order to get to the body without further damaging it. Took several hours and wasn’t really suitable to be done at the scene.

Recovery drivers must be made of Stone, risking thier lives everyday and then having to deal with stuff like that.

It’s all a bit strange.Surely the ■■■■■■ van would have been expected to be in lane 2 covering the wide out size load ?.While surely the truck behind would be expected to be in lane 3 at that point.Nothing else makes any sense.

No doubt be the same thing that happened in the accident where the Turners ran stright up the back of the transporter and set on fire on the A1 around Ripon about 2 month ago. Pics on that are shocking also, crushed cab with an Audi sat where the driver normally would and all the cab alight from the fridge setting on fire.

It doesn’t matter what caused the low loader and ■■■■■■ van to stop, the Merc was travelling too fast and too close, clearly proven by the resulting carnage.

With traffic volumes what they are, there just isn’t enough room on the roads anymore, maybe it’s time for M25 style variable speed limits on all busy roads. Much less chance of not being able to stop in time and if you don’t, the impact will be less severe and everyone goes home after.

What is the downside? It’s likely to improve journey times, there will be less accidents and the resulting road closures or hold ups due to rubbernecking. Doing a steady speed is far less tiring than being on constant alert for sudden stops. 56mph isn’t exactly exhilarating speed, so no loss of “thrill” and you’re paid by the hour, so it won’t hurt the bank balance.

I work with an exHATO who’s done recovery work as well and that is what happens - the wreck is taken to a secure site and shall we say worked on, in private and with no time constraints.
