From the mid 50’s,Walter M Hatton’s Ford ET6’s with insulated van bodies were a regular sight delivering meat & game products within a 50 mile radius of Southampton.Hattons operated from a yard/garage in Romsey Rd,Maybush.Following his death in 1961,the other shareholders(Mr & Mrs GC Alliston) assumed control & combined the Hatton operation with their own Wessex Haulage & Transport which operated 6 flats/tippers.In Feb 1962,Wessex also acquired the 8 vehicle operation of J.Searle & M.J.Smith of Old Kennels Lane,Olivers Battery Nr Winchester, & all 3 operations were based at Woodside Road Eastleigh (Just under the old railway arch on the right hand side)

By transferring & surrendering various of their licences,Hattons fleet by 1963 was made up of ‘A’ Licences “General goods England & Wales
& ‘B’ Licences " Meat & game products 100 mile radius Southampton Civic Centre” They continued to deliver meat products to various ports for export & when TCF commenced services from Southampton, Hatton’s customers were quick to see the opportunities.

In the late 60’s the fleet was fully articulated nainly with Seddon & Atkinson vehicles

By the mid 1970’s ,Volvo was the dominant marque.

In 1975,the 14 vehicle operation was acquired by the Renwick Freight Group who with their DAF agency were able to renew the fleet with yellow DAF 2600’s

Dean asked Dont remember this company from Salisbury. W.G.Prater who used to do continental meat haulage.
Buzzer may remember them as not far from him ?

Like Walter M Hatton, W.G.Prater specialised in transport of carcass meat from local abbatoirs to France & Italy.
When he retired from the RAF in 1966,Mr Prater from Winterbourne Gunner Nr Salisbury , used his gratuity to acquire a standard Leyland Octopus with a Sparshatt built fridge body.Initially the vehicle was equipped with a British Oxygen Polarstream system which used Nitrogen as a cooling agent .With no mechanical parts,it was also quiet !

Later, the vehicle was returned to Sparshatts who fitted a sleepercab extension, fitted lifting eyes to the 30ft body & a Petter fridge unit was also fitted .The vehicle was a regular shipper on TCF

Hi all do not remember Prater but have thoughts that as they were from Salisbury they may have hauled for Coggan’s who had the abattoir at Funtley near Fareham, I say this as Mr Coggan resided in West Tytherly not that far from Salisbury so could be a connection. The sleeper cab was probably the work of Locomotors of Andover, looks like there work and in 1966 that would have been very modern. Later A.S.Rawlings used to haul lambs to Swiss from Funtley always departing on a Saturday night, cheers Buzzer.

Hi JD
Remember going to Funtley slaughterhouse as boy, had wagons in and out of there daily in those days

Hi all,yes i used to go to Funtley slaughter house when i a was a boy late 50 early 60 my dad worked on a farm that had the contract to take the dung from the larage where the animals were kept over night. Also my missus worked there for about 30 years first for John Coggland then for Bennetts who bought it. They were a meat processing and packing company from Appleshore near Andover they supplied all the supermarkets. She used to do all the export paperwork for the lamb’s going mainly to France and Switzerland. There was Hatton’s (jock walker R.I.P.) he did it probably late 60 early 70 then a few other’s including Rawling’s and in later year’s probably the last one’s were Wm Armstrong’s from Longtown ■■■■■■■■■■■■ did a lot up till it closed and they built house’s on the site. They do say that anything you plant in the garden’s there grow’s really well, must be all the meat and bone rotted under there over the year’s

Footnote to your post Kev, once I went there with an older man to do a quote for fencing round there paddocks where stock was held overnight, remember a firm I think called Ascots or they were from ASCOT and the bloke was chucking all the guts etc into the back of a TK Bedford and I think it was processed for pet food, your good lady would probably know who I am on about.
Never used to amaze me how quickly a steer would be dismantled, through the crush got stunned the throat cut over a blood bath (they had a special treatment plant for this IIRC) then skinned and remember the nerves still twitching on the head, nowadays you would not be allowed any where near an operation like that but times have changed, Buzzer

Morning John,
Years ago, after stunning they shook a steel rod about in the hole between the eyes to kill off the nerves so when they put the hooks in to lift it over the pit it didnt kick you in the head.
It was called Pilling, had to stop after the BSE fiasco, as you say, how things have changed eh!!. Harvey
