Fred Dibnah heritage centre closing

A real shame, Fred Dibnah was surely one of the last really great engineers of his time…

Fred Dibnah was a hero of mine, what a great character he was and a steam enthusiast rather than a great engineer, his nerves of steel and head for heights put him in as one of the all time great steeple jacks of our time. I attended an evening with him where he did public talks, very dry sense of humour and just an interesting character. I saw Mike Tyson on one of these dinners and wanted my money back at the end, would have paid triple for Fred Dibnah evening as it was that good.

Bet you did’nt ask Tyson for your money back though.[emoji1]

Elf and safety would have kittens watching Fred go about his business these days.

Try watching this without your hands sweating. Don’t make them like this anymore.

the yoof of today are only interested in one thing, making money so they don’t have to work, not saying all are but most are just bone idle.

ask a yoof of today to wire a plug up or change a fuse or change a flat tyre and they will look at you funny and reach for a smartphone ap to get somone out to do it for them at ruinous expence

Didn’t know his place was now a heritage centre so will pay a visit before it closes, there are not many people I can listen to for a long time that hold my interest but this fella was a definite one off.

You mean, like everyone else they expect to be paid adequately for work of a reasonable intensity?

So at what age did you first do these things, and how did you learn?

I actually got thrown out by his minders for asking him a question in the question and answer section of the dinner. I paid £50 and ended up eating half my chicken before being removed. Fred Dibnah was far better.

I bet plenty of kids still do these things having been shown by their parents.

I’m only 31 and I learnt a lot of practical skills from my dad. Was building computers in my teens. Could certainly wire a plug. My dad taught me a lot of motorcycle maintenance and I was changing my own motorbike tyres in my early twenties. Always got stuck in to repairs to my car and diy. But I’d say I’m of the first proper iPhone generation.

I’ll definitely be passing practical skills onto my son. And that’s the problem maybe, how many yoof get a chance to learn anything practical?

I confess I didn’t know anything about the heritage centre or even it’s exisistance, there doesn’t seem to be any details on the website or FB page as to the date when it will close, nor is there any info regarding entry fee prices. So when I get a moment I’ll give them a call.
With the fickleness of agency work, I’m sure I’ll find myself with a day off & If the Dibnah centre is not already closed & isn’t closing in the next few weeks I might, if I have a day off, make the effort to go visit the place before it finally closes.

Interestingly I was listening to Chris Evans on the radio recently (something I don’t normally do) and their conversation turned to various specialist small museums scattered around the country, a couple of them caught my imagination, inc the Ska (music) museum in Coventry raf.mod.uk/rafscampton/heri … centre.cfm

I bet that was said about your generation, if you’re a different age to me?
it was said about my generation, no doubt also about my fathers generation.

There are many people of all ages who can’t do those things, it’s not just the young and like us all they need somebody to teach them first.
There are still many youngsters in sheds and garages tinkering with cars, motorbikes or even computers and electronics. Ok when they roll out with thier pimped up machine, most of us will go “what the [zb] have you done to that” but we need to remember the crap we thought was “cool” at their age.

Exactly, and who needs to know how to wire a plug these days as they are moulded on! As I said previously I know a lot of youngsters who are very interested in our heritage, when I drag my 1930’s sheep shearer or a milking outfit out of the garage it is surprising just how much interest is shown by the local ‘yoof’ of today!

Pete.

They do tours every wed thurs sat @ 2.30 email freddibnahtours@live.com
The chap who runs the tours is Leon, I was enquiring into the date of the proposed auction as I wish to attend and possibly buy some tools or machinery and like some folk on the truck forum I am into old trucks and tractors and hopefully buy some of Fred Dibnas tools.

Have always enjoyed watching his documentries, also passed him once on the 62, also paid a visit to the centre when I had a spare 5 minutes after a Bolton delivery, and one of the his best laid back quotes of chimney climbing, “If you make one mistake, it’s half a day out with the undertaker.”

All credit to you although I would have to say the number of young lads (and old lads) modding Land Rovers etc. and the like has been in decline for a long time. It might be that they’re just not interested but there are other factors like not being able to afford a house so nowhere to put it.
