PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION

Remember when going scotch (if from the south), or going down to the smoke (if from the north), was long distance?
When Middle East work was readily available?.
When driving a 111 or F89 meant you were truly the king of the road?
Recall those companies long gone, where every day was an adventure?

What ever happened to those drivers you spent hours with.. where did they go? and recollect on those characters in the industry sadly no longer with us.
This forum is for us all to indulge in a little nostalgia and remember with rose coloured glasses how much better it was in the olden days

Hi Mark,
If you are correct that van must have been about 20 years old when it went in for re-paint. I must admit it looks in remarkable condition. However it makes you wonder what's going on at Pickfords. Just a few months ago I saw about 6 vans for sale on Trucktrader all under 2 years old. Why would anyone sane keep 20 + years old when parting with almost new?

Any thoughts or gossip?
Hope you have a good New Year

Thanks "ergomatic man" for your comments. Moran sound like Harts they used to like converting trucks/tippers to what they

The white Maggie on page 396 in Javelin transport colours, they came from Wellesbourne in Warwickshire. Their yard was on the main road into the village just past the old Fountain Cafe on the left hand side. I think they finished in the late 80s.

Hi Rob & All

I think the FL is STS UK lorry probabaly working for Eurolink which was the sister company in partnership with John Southerland ( I think thats the correct spelling ) as the did mostly containers to & from the Far East.

F H R is Frank Herbert Roberts now Roberts Distribution from Eastleigh run by his sons.

Still miss not seeing F.B.Atkins trucks on the road who were from Finder,Derby.

A big concern that are no longer with us who did alot of European work and therefore had an office in Poole docks and
an office in Cherbourg. Swains of Stretton and Axminster transport also both had offices in Cherbourg in the 1970's.

Hi Carl,
Although Dean points out the photo was taken in 2003 quite a few of these R plate volvo's were still on the road up until about two years ago....i think there maybe the odd one still in service....but in all fairness the bodies on the 6 leg volvo's were all built by Bevans from the Midlands .....and were designed to be very hard wearing with very few gadgets so one fits all ramps and so on .....so not suprised they still look good with a new coat of paint.

The new Pickfords these days are putting these old Bevans bodies on second hand chassis .....a lot of these refurbished trucks are then sold to the franchised members around the country...
.they also build bodies in certain parts of the country and plant them on second hand chassis ....and also buy second hand trucks also these days.

So they do run vehicles of a very old age these days.

Regards Mark
