Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

I know Ray worked at Steenbergs for a little while too, probably mid 60’s. I remember Dad told me him and his mate Bill Ashworth were loading 200cwt bags all handball one day and the gaffer turned up with Ray saying he was a new starter and with his build he would easily show them how to load those bags. They all set about it but it wasn’t long before Ray was struggling he was just grabbing the bags around the middle and waddling up the trailer so was soon knackered. Bill stopped him and showed him how to get the bags onto the shoulder in one movement and into place. Despite Bill being slightly built although wiry both him and my Father knew the technique. Give Ray his due he said he’d learnt something that day and it wasn’t all about having muscles. I got on well with Ray at Van Hee’s it was a shame to hear a little while back he was suffering with dementia, anyone know how he is? Franky.
