Worried about losing licence

I wonder if anybody can help or a bit info about a problem that has landed on me and has got me worried. Story is i went for yearly eye test at specsavers and she gave me a letter to take to my Dr, went to see Dr and he made a appointment at main Eye Hospital for my area went to hospital got a few tests done then the consultant says he cant understand it as the thing that is wrong with my eyes ( even though i did not notice any diff and had no problems was optician who found it ) is a problem that usually only occurs in much older people meaning 70+ he says ( i am only 50 ) so he wants me to go to a more specialist consultant to get his opinion. So i did a bit research into this thing thats called AMD ( age related mascular degeneration ) and it has really got me wound up.
So i wonder will DVLA take my licence away or what will the outcome be, i would be the first to hand licence back if i thought there was a problem with my driving because of my sight but in all honestly i have never noticed the slightest diff with my sight apart from normal use glasss for reading/driving.
So i wonder has anybody on here had this before etc.
So it must be true the old saying that giving it a tug too much does make you go blind faster :open_mouth: .
Sorry to rabbit on a bit but i am really worried bout ticket.
Cheers.

I would have thought as long as you still meet the minimum sight requirements with and without glasses there would be no reason to take your licence.

I certainley wouldn’t try to give you specialist advice but i always understood that ‘age related mascular degeneration’ happens a lot earlier than 70 years old. It just means the process wherby your eyes get older and can’t focus like they once could. I didn’t wear glasses until i was in my thirties, i have it. I understood most people over the age of forty have it to some degree or another?

Is there a without glasses part now? I haven’t taken one for a while, but all the one’s I have taken were if glasses were normally worn, then the test was with glasses on. :open_mouth: you’ve got me worried now I have one coming up.

Oh well maybe i am just panicking for no need then. But that is what this specialist said that he was surprised to see this problem in a 50 yr old as its normally over 70s that have it.
Must have been the hard life i have had  .

There always has been a minimum uncorrected requirement.

From the information and notes leaflet that accompanies the medical form.

  • a visual acuity of at least 6/9 in the better eye
  • a visual acuity of at least 6/12 in the worse eye, and
  • if these are achieved by wearing glasses or contact lenses the uncorrected visual acuity in each eye must be no less than 3/60.

If you are a smoker that can have a bearing on it.

Im going the other way - at my last eye test the optician said one of my eyes is actually getting better, which is apparently not very common :open_mouth:
So it turns out, as Im getting older my eyes are actually getting better (Ive been wearing glasses since year 7 or 8 at senior school)

Must be because you always have your eyes closed :stuck_out_tongue: Asleep on the hard shoulder waiting for a tow truck is a hard job for the eyes.

I have had a few medicals ( at my age :frowning: :frowning: ) always done by my own doctor, and always with glasses on, maybe I have just been lucky.

First things first Mekong. Would you get rid of that zbin avatar please. Its making my zbin eyes go all funny. :open_mouth:

Now for the serious stuff. Have you considered going to see another optician? Not Specsavers. and getting a Second opinion. You haven,t mentioned whether you normally wear glasses or not If not. Then would corrective glasses not help ■■

I,m 75,and never needed glasses of any sort until I was 69. It is only in the last 6 months that I have noticed a deterioration in my eyesight. Peoples faces are slightly out of focus as they come towards me. and they are within about 30ft, before their features are correctly in focus.I put that down myself to Age related Macular Degenoration. The schoolgirl using the hi-tech equipment told me that I had 20/20 vision (true), then went on to give me new prescriptions for reading, and outside glasses. +2 pair of high priced frames. There was me thinking that you had to have eyesight like a zb-house rat to have 20/20 vision. Anyway, I have given the new outdoor glasses a fair trial and they are U/S. I am taking them back for a check-up next week…Which is why I suggestb that you get your eyes tested with another optician. To see if you get the same result. The Specialist wasn,t an Iraqi or a Kurd or summat was he. The specialist who examined Baby Peter (r.i.p.)failed to see that the poor little feller had a broken back.Nuff sed. I can also tell you, from long and bitter experience that worrying don,t help.

Naughtyyyyy! If I,d have said that, I,d have got a rake of zb, zzb,s and other assorted zbs, thrown at me :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: Maybe he eats a lot of carrots. You don,t see many rabbits wearin glasses do yer?? :grimacing: :grimacing:

Maybe you need to clean your glasses. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks Neil. Where,s that Raspberry smiley when yer need it. Oh , Ive found it now  :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe you shouldn’t have gone to Specsavers.

Sorry couldn’t resist that

Sadly this is nonsense.

The common process where about the age of 35 to 50 we lose the ability to change focus easily is called presbyopia - the usual symptom in anyone who did not wear glasses as a kid is “Running Out Of Arm”…

AMD is a very different gig where the patient loses detail in the central visual field - this cannot be cured by different glasses - the original poster is right to be concerned.
