You mean the Scammell Scarab also known as the Mechanical Horse.

A few months ago I read this book and the author recounts tales of driving them when he worked for the railway in Manchester. I also remember having a model/toy one when I was a kid.

They could turn so tightly that they all had dented cabs on the rear corners.

Wouldn’t fancy a night out in one!
