New o/d advie on truck

hiya all considering going the o/d route just getting few feelers at the minute , not realy after the money but more build a reputation for later years when i would need it as have no comitments at current :smiley: but charge a fair rate no point lowering the price even more than oit already is and putting even more pepole out of a job and only drivers will be family or pepole that new if ever things went that far would rather keep it small tbh .

have around 15-20k to put in could get more from banks etc but would rather use my own money to be honest , money also has to cover oporaters licnce fuel etc for first 60days and insurance start up preumims

i no will get flamed but oh well :laughing: just looking at some of the newer erf as seam good bang for the money i no they will fall to bits if hit a speed hump to hard but seam to good a money atm to refuse .

persnoaly would rather have 143 v8 but does it realy make good financhel choice to buy a well looked after old scanny or look into something newer example erf the very plastic stallies :unamused: .

will be driven by myself but would consider double manning the unit with someone i get on well with and could actualy feel comfatble sleeping knowing there behind the wheel .

whats pepoles verdict’s buy outright or lease something

many thanks

That’s not going to leave you much, if anything, to buy the wagon with. Depending on the work you’re doing you could easily spend 8k on fuel alone before you get any invoices paid, 5k on insurance, 1.2k on a year’s tax, and 800quid on O-Licence costs to name but a few things, and that adds up to 15k already before you think about breakdowns, tyres, trailer rental, and of course buying the truck itself. Plus of course you need to pay your rent and eat and put fuel in your car during that time.

thanks for the repley , i was hoping the insurance could be paid on a monthly baisis and been qouted between 3500-4500 max

trailer hire wont be needed as pulling others trailer

payment is on a 30day sceme

i do have another 10k if realy need it but means selling my weekend toy :laughing:

I pay my insurances by monthly direct debits :wink:

not realy after the money

In that case, you have come to the right place! :smiley:

but more build a reputation for later years

A nice idea but the fact is that the game is all about price, if someone can do it for a couple of quid less than you then the customer will invariably go with them over you. This might not apply to specialist haulage but certainly does in run-of-the-mill stuff like general haulage and tippers. You need to be making money from the word go, it is very difficult to scuffle around for a few years trying to build a reputation but not making anything for the inevitably rainy day that will follow.

well obliviosly i would like enough to pay myself a wage as would everyone at the minute :laughing:

i dont actualy need to take any money out as a wage for first 12months but the aim would be to plough that money straight back in .

obliviolsy the buissnis has to run at a profit in the long run but providing am earning a wage in the long run thats fine with me , understand unless i get realy lucky am not going to make a fortune but providing can pay myself minimum wage and keep my head above water thats good enough for me .

obliosly would like to be in a postion to go out buy a new tractor unit but dont see that as been the case for the next 5years , its always something that have wanted to do since been about 13 and now am in a postion to actualy do it might just take the leep

many thanks

you can pay monthly insurance but you will have to pay trailer hire unless its taken out the rate of the job

Go for it mate,trust your own instincts if you know the game,

thanks for the vote of confidence :laughing:

i wouldnt say i all clued up about it to be honest but willing to put the time and effort in for sure and have family that is able to give advice who are in with some of the companys that hit the headlighns for doing well and expanding etc

like i say its just a mind feild at the minute and not something am going to be rushing into will take a fair few months and if feel the same way then i may just go for it , i would possibly say at the minute up to the xmas rush is the best time for o/d its just after xmas that i can see the struggle

Seems like you’ve got a plan, you have the spare money, and the traction work lined up, give it a go, you sound more clued up than most. I know I shouldn’t correct your spelling but some of it was cringe worthy, if you are dyslexic, I will whip myself 10 times. If you are sending e-mails/letters to customers it can leave a bad impression, get them checked before you send!

Headligns= Headlines
Obliviolsy/Obliosly= Obviously
Buissnis= Business

well best get yourself whiped 10times then :laughing:

i prefer the face to face dealings but as we all no it’s not always possible , emails are checked by someone that can spell better that me , so that describe’s most of juniour school’s :laughing:

am good with figure’s though :stuck_out_tongue:

thanks

Done the whipping, enjoyed it too! Just thought i’d give you a heads up as I have in the past been shown another haulier’s poor spelling in an e-mail by an incredulous transport buyer!
