My first 2 hour lesson

I did my first 2 hour lesson today and It went really good.
I now know how to use the marker to put the bumper in
the reversing area as when we was somewhere near
magna in Rotherham on an industrial estate someone as
spray painted a area to reverse in to just like the one on
the test. So as the artic was using the reverse area at
atlas as it gets priority over the rest we used the sprayed
one. I need to adjust my speed on approach to roundabouts
and get in gear earlier so I can look for a space for the truck and
also need to work on gear change exercise. I used the
air brakes better today but they still need a little work.
the back wheel just went over the edge on a mini roundabout at
five lane ends turning right heading towards
conisbougher and I clipped the kerb turning left at a
roundabout in Rotherham as I was watching the car on
my right as he was very close to the line between us.
I also staled twice at bq roundabout in Rotherham as it
was busy and I rushed to get on the roundabout.
High points of today’s driving was when I turned left
at conisbougher traffic lights heading towards Rotherham
and I got round the corner with a car at the lights and he
said a lot clip that kerb so I was pleased.also I was
reading the road ahead well as I had to stop twice as
one car pulled out on me as I was going round a roundabout
and the other decided to reverse in to my side of the
road without looking from side road. I drove down to
narrow country roads one being micklebery lane and
other the conisbougher road from five lane ends.
I can do the emergency stop(now called the controlled stop).

A happy convoy

Sounds like you’ve enjoyed it.

I sure am enjoying it Gordy but I took
my mother shopping after the lesson
and I must have used all my concentration
on the 2 hour lesson as at asda I had to
take a shunt to get my car in and that made
me laugh as I thought about a post on
here a while back about truck drivers
being able to park trucks but cannot
park cars for toffee.

Glad to hear things went well, Convoy. Most of all you enjoyed it which can only be a good thing. Good luck with the rest of your training.

I had a good start this time as the clutch
did not go. so I could change gear without
pulling my side or making my shoulder ache
with trying to get it in gear. also the
instructor said you enjoyed that and I said
why does the face give it away .
thanks Dan and Gordy for your
replys and best wishes.
roll on next thursday my next lesson

Keep us posted Convoy glad you are enjoying it.

Glad to hear it went well Convoy!

Now you see what I mean about five lanes end? You won’t be going round there on your test thank god!

The traffic lights at the junction in Conisbrough are a good test, especially if the cars waiting on the main Rotherham-Doncaster Road are beyond the white line. (Bet you can’t wait to go round there in an artic!)

Can also get a bit hairy on the lanes round Crookhill Golf Course and Micklebring.

Liked the way you cocked up the car driving after your lesson. I get in the car after driving the lorry and can’t drive properly. (I forget that the car only has five gears :open_mouth: )

Keep us posted with your progress.

roll on next thursday my next lesson

What time is your lesson? I will be in Edlington that day. Do you want me to come and put some hazards in your way to keep you on your toes?

Sounds like you had a good time and are enjoying it Convoy. Good luck with the next one  .

My lesson on Thursday 9th is at 2pm to 4pm
but my instructor only works weekends and
drives through the week so I will have someone
else hopefully get some new tips. I have to do reverse
exercise first so I will be probably be leaving
the yard about 2:15pm hopefully turning right.
when I approached five lane ends I was doing
everything at once and as I was going round
it looks as though you will go down the bank
so I turned early and went over the roundabout.
Micklebring lane there is a section where you
can only have one car passing at once as a
wall is in the lane heading towards five lane
ends. you don’t need to put hazards in edlington
as car drivers put hazards on and start having a chat to
pedestrians on the path and leaving back end of
car way out from kerb :unamused: . I could not Imagine an
artic turning left at those lights :open_mouth:

I found this on here posted in 2003 of some test
routes of Sheffield -

Whiston traffic lights left turn comind gown hill.

Stag R’about all exits.

The weight limits in Rotherham.

Tinsley viaduct including both R’abouts.

Top of the Manor.

Firth Park T’ junction with zebra crossing

I will post my progress sometime Thursday.
thanks for all reply’s and comments

Most of the test routes are on the Rotherham side of Sheffield, and usually most of the time is spent in Rotherham.

It would be very rare to go into Sheffield on your test as once you are in there, it takes ages to get back out!

I’ll keep an eye out for you on Thursday - watch for somebody jumping into the middle of the road to test your controlled stop! (It won’t be me - probably one of the locals just trying to blag a lift!)

Good luck with lesson number 2!
