Lgv wages for proffessional drivers

im not jumping the gun here, im not through my test yet class 2, but got a job lined up when passed. i think i,ll be on about £6 hr my m8 works there he,s class 1 driver 8 yrs now working away from home tramping i think you call it, he says he gets about £420 to bring home after tax & ni. i think he,s on about £6.50 hr but gets about £100 a week for working away makes his £420 a week mon till fri night. he says they let you work a sunday till fri get £550 to lift but i said how you can only work 60 hrs a week total i think. not being cheeky but £6 hr or £7hr for a proffessional truck driver to me thats poor wages for yous lot saying the traffic ect you have to put up with and the minimun wage is about a £5 hr i think not sure. personally it will be a godsend for me and my family as we only get £180 week unemployed so we,ll be a lot better off and i love driving anyway. i think all hgv drivers should be on a minimun £8 per hour
for the work they do and what they have to put up with. (((((i read an article saying to charge cars 5pence a kilom and hgv 10pence a kilom on motorways to get extra funds to wideing motaways what the hells the tax on all the vehicles for then, i think hgvs firms are getting hit too much off the poxy goverment diesal costs a fortune now , ((were in the eu, so how comes we are getting same prices as other eu countries for example i smoke hand rolling backy £10 in shops i get it for £4 from france off a m8 its illeagal but common sense to save money. i think the whole country should come to a halt for fuel prices not just the poor hgv drivers and firms to get it sorted.

i think all hgv drivers should be on a minimun £8 per hour

That would be nice
Min £8 ph for C & £10 ph for CE day work with extra for nights, weekends etc and extra for London area drivers :unamused: - I SEE A FLYING PIG

u can get £10 an hr on days class1 with an agency, and overtime rates, there is ad’s in my local paper every week.

I think gothika was referring to having a minimum LGV rate whether it be agency or permanent

To expand this a bit further, do you think there should be set minmum rates in driving jobs depending on what size of vehicle is driven

:bulb: :bulb: :bulb: :bulb:
general day rates 6am to 6pm, with possibly the London area getting a percentage enhancement

under 3.5 tonnes = current general minimum wage
3.5 to 7.5 = £7ph
C = £8.50ph
CE = £10ph

ROG:
3.5 to 7.5 = £7ph

WHAT? That’s no good. I used to drive a lowly D1 minibus and get £7.63 ph and I thought that was taking the mick.

Gimmemoremoney!

Well, I had to start somewhere - what would your proposal be

Hi hotrod_boogie, Going by the way you’ve written that, it sounds like you might believe it. :unamused:

:grimacing: Have you actually tried to verify that info

Many agencies use exactly that tactic to get you interested. When you speak to them by phone, they’ll say “yes, that’s right, just come along and we’ll get you registered.” However, once they’ve got you in their office, I’ll almost guarantee they’ll then say something like “ahh, but that job is fully allocated now, but we have this one here for eg. £6.50 per hour…”

Have you actually been there face-to-face and heard them say “yes mate, you’ll be on £10 per hour” and “can you start on Monday”

Tenner an hour is the standard basic rate for several agencies round my way.

Yes Rob, that’s about the going rate for some around my way too.

Has the scenario I described above ever happened to you too
I posted that from my own experience, bloody annoying once you’ve made the effort to go there eh  :smiling_imp:

Then I re-read the OP and saw that it’s from gothika, who hasn’t done his Cat “C” yet, and I’ve a feeling there’s not many agencies that would pay £10 ph for a newbie on Cat “C,” so maybe I missed the point.

I clarify that kind of thing with them on the bell before even considering going down to sign up.

No you’re right. He hasn’t a hope in hell of getting a tenner an hour. He’ll do well to get £6/hr as a n00b.

B start 7.20ph or 15K
C1 start at £8ph. or 17K
C start £8.80ph or 18.3K (or 10% more than C1)
CE start £9.60 or 20K (or 20% more than C)

(Annual figures based on 40h weeks, 20 days holiday (excluding bank holidays) + 8 bank holidays)

More for experience, overtime, specialisms or area (HIAB, ADR, London weighting, etc).

Oh, and while we’re at it, throw a couple of extra paid bank holidays in the year. One around the end of Oct and perhaps your country’s patron Saint’s day (Andrew/ David/ George/ Patrick). (And also Scottish banks should work to Scottish bank holidays and not English ones :imp: in other words don’t steal money out of my account on the 2nd Jan when you don’t bother opening your branches :imp: :imp: :imp: )

Sorry about that, had to get it off me chest

I learned to do that too, but I learned that lesson the hard way, having been caught out by the “let’s get him into the office” con.
Ah well, I suppose we were all green as to the way they operate when we approached our first agency.

Mind you, it was very different for me as I’d been an employed driver for about 18 years before I ever went anywhere near an agency. Come to think of it, I can’t remember there being any driving agencies when I started out. Back then you just had to go knocking on doors and phoning firms directly .

Agencies -

Ask what there rates are specifically day shift rate, nightshift rate, weekend rates, what daily hours are guareenteed before you do anything.

Some will tell you yeah its £8 days and £10 overtime kinda thing, kinda suggest its £10 nights when the nightshift rate is £8.25.

Also ask if the rate is the same for every job you goto, some places get shifts where you are usually getting £16 say for a Sunday night but because its a different contract its only £10 per hour.

If the hourly rate for a different contract is crap knock it back because if they are desperate will call you back and offer it at your normal rate.

One thing ive found with agencies is the ones offering the big money tend to have bugger all work for you a lot of the time. Yeah getting paid decent hourly rate but they can only get you a few shifts a week. I’m getting £11.50 per hour nights just now some of my mates saying thats crap come to the agency we work for, get more money. But i can get a shift any day i want and always plenty of work where as they are struggling to get a few shifts a week just now.

i work for Royal Mail mostly 7.5t part time contract 20hrs a week we are on £10 an hour for the first 40 then it reduces plenty of over time going In the first year I was there I got £25,000

I’ll be getting about £7.35 an hour soon.

That’s for Class 2 with Brick Grab, day work.

here in the northeast i think wages are lower, i will be working for a firm full time its either £6 or £6.50 hr its not a lot if i work 60 hrs it will work out alright, down the south its always more money, when you think you are proffessional drivers doing a proffessional job that a lot of people would,nt entertain, and say an imigrant or a dozy bugger from leeds say get about £5 hr min wage and has no brains just sweeping up. it doesn,t justify wages

Wages might be good in the South East, but here in East Anglia they ain’t brilliant either.

I’m getting £8.50 an hour for class 2 hiab off Manpower on contract to Network Rail

I get £8.50 p/h driving class 2 but then again my gaffer does pay good rates.
