Journalist Researching Best Roadside Places To Eat

Dear All,

I’m a food journalist for Radio 4 and the Independent on Sunday. I’ve set up my own awards for street food (check out www.britishstreetfood.co.uk), that launch in Ludlow next month, and I really want to find out where the drivers rate as the best places to eat by the roadside. I was looking around for a thread where you talk about this stuff, but I couldn’t see anything. Any pointers please?

Really appreciated!

Best wishes,

Richard Johnson (www.rjsj.demon.co.uk)

We’re not helping much are we?
Sorry, but I’ve not done alot in the UK for a few years and sadly many good cafe have closed down.
But I’m sure there are one or 2 gooduns left and a few road side vans that offer good food at a decent price.

I hope you find something and if you don’t you could use the lack of decent facilities for trucks drivers and other road users and them compare it with what’s on offer in other parts of Europe.

I’ve look at the http://britishstreetfood.co.uk/ and I think he’s after mobile food places for this competition I wonder how well the Hurly Burley Bus would do in a layby, food and Entertainment on you 45 minute break

markham moor truckstop.

How do you define mobile though?

There are many places in the UK, that are not built from bricks and mortar that are very good. Portakabin type buildings that although on a site, are by their definition a temporary structure, so theoretically could be classed as mobile.

If that is the case, then I have been going to a place for 10 years, and enjoy what is served before me.

It’s Ma Larkins off J27 M1. Top of the Northbound exit slip, and when at the top, look to the left next to highways yard, and it’s outside. It is the same type of building that I mentioned above, and was recently burnt down by some low life, but a new ‘building’ is now in it’s place.

It’s only downside is the lay by that it’s adjacent to, is not big enough for a lot of vehicles, but I have always managed to get in.

Ken.
