Advice on approach

evening all. could anyone advize on this. When approaching traffic lights on a 40mph road and they are on green how far away should you ease up and to what speed.so to tryand not have to brake to sharply at the lights(is that a serious) and run the risk of going through on amber

i would ease of anyway 40 is the max speed .you will know how long they have been on green and would expect a change so be ready

I like this question
gently feather the brakes so that your speed drops to 30 and then change down one gear - keep feathering the brakes on approach with the intention to stop, on reaching the point where you cannot stop safely - put your foot on the accelerator and GO FOR IT - if the lights then change at this point you will have made your decision and will go through as they turn to amber and will not get caught on a red.

To avoid a SERIOUS you must CONSIDER that the lights may change and BE PREPARED for such an eventuality.

Having to brake shsarply at the lights is a serious
Going so fast you cant stop so having to go through on amber is a serious.

What Rog advises is spot on so no need to repeat here.

Remember - the most dangerous colour for traffic lights is green.
When they are red you do your slowing down process so the only thing that can happen is that they turn back to ‘go’ so thats fine.
Amber tells you exactly what is going to happen nextGreen are the ones that catch you out so be ultra careful.
If you have a real clear view for some long distance on approach just make sure you check out how long they have actually been on green. The longer they have been on green the more likelyhood there is that they will change when you get there.

Thanks for that will keep it in mind and practice in the car

Good idea - enjoy your test at Weedon with Dave, Terry or Clive - they are great examiners who all sing the same tune and look for a good smooth SAFE drive with good forward vision and planning.
