Hi thomasb9295,

My advice to you is that you take the standard Core, Packages and seven of the nine UN Classes to include Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 from the list below.
This course is usually 3 days of tuition, then an extra half a day for the exams, so 3.5 days in total.
You can get 21 DCPC hours at the same time for this, if the ADR provider is also registered and approved to deliver DCPC.

The tanker module is a separate module and optional, so I’d say that you can save money on that if you have no realistic prospect of needing to drive a tanker that carries dangerous goods.

There are 9 UN Classes of dangerous goods as follows:

  • UN Class 1 Explosives (1 extra day of tuition, very specialised and quite expensive)
  • UN Class 2 Gases
  • UN Class 3 Flammable liquids
  • UN Class 4 Other flammable substances
  • UN Class 5 Oxidisers and Organic Peroxides
  • UN Class 6 Toxic and Infectious
  • UN Class 7 Radioactives (1 extra day of tuition, very specialised and even more expensive)
  • UN Class 8 Corrosives
  • UN Class 9 Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles

The most usual combination of Classes is: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9

Is that a personal recommendation or is there a list of recommended ADR providers ?

I’ve recently completed all core modules and tankers just so I had the lot( I say recently it’s just over a year now ) , not even had use for it yet and it only lasts 5 years , but as said it go’s towards Cpc so killed two birds …

I previously had an ADR for 15 years (worked at Calor gas) so wanted to keep it up .

Does it only last 5 years, what happens then do you have retake all modules again?

As I understand it a refresher is done but its very intense so many choose to do the original course again especially as many things can change in 5 years

Doing the original again which gets treated as a refresher can also get 21 hours for dcpc whereas the refresher only gets 7 hours - both subject to them be approved for dcpc

I think the difference in time between the refresher and the original is about a day but not certain of that

It’s a local company near me who I did my c , c+e , jcb 310 ,telehandler and do my dcpc with them ,DSA registered good company to deal with Rog , just thought if I do the ADR course I know them so not going to get hamstrung like a broker mite do , only got 7hrs dcpc to do which is paid for by my present employer , although my present employer won’t pay for ADR as not required , the company do a lot of training in this area as you would have to to travel to Glasgow for these type of courses so a wee bit handier, thanks Rog for your reply cheers.

Hi thomasb9295,

Cheers for the extra info

In your case, you could book the ADR course that I’ve mentioned above, but please make it clear to the provider that you only need 1 X 7 hrs more for your DCPC.
That should save you some money

IF it’s a refresher for Core, Packs and seven classes, then 2.5 days is needed for everything including the exams.

If it’s got the tanker module, then it’s approx. 3.75 days.

All updates are included, but many of the guys struggle to take it all in within the time allowed, hence the exam fail rate for refresher courses is a little higher than normal.

IMHO, the guys suffer because their employers fail to update them at the time that the changes to the law are made.

ADR is completely reprinted and republished every 2 years, so it’s not difficult to see why some of the guys struggle.

Hi Boris1971,

Yes mate, an ADR licence is valid for 5 years.

Boris1971:

Yes, but you can do that by taking a refresher course.
If you take the refresher within the last year of validity of your ADR licence (but not within the last 5 weeks,) any unexpired portion of the ‘old’ ADR licence is added to the validity of the new one.
