Hi newtrucker128, An ADR course can be customised to your requirements.

Everybody must do a ‘core’ module of 1.5 days…

Then you choose how you will carry dangerous goods, either ‘in packages,’ or ‘in tanks,’
(You must choose one or the other [or both] of these.)
The packages module is 2hrs 15mins duration, whilst the tanks module is 1.5 days.
The tanker module isn’t something I’d recommend for a newbie due to the cost and the unlikelihood of you obtaining employment as a tanker driver. Tanker firms usually require lots of experience.

Then you choose from this list which of the 9 UN Classes of dangerous goods you would like to be licenced to carry:

Here are the 9 danger Classes:

UN Class 1

UN Class 2

UN Class 3

UN Class 4

UN Class 5
…[NEW 5.2 LABEL :arrow_right: ]

UN Class 6

UN Class 7

UN Class 8

UN Class 9

My advice to you is that you should leave out UN Classes 1 & 7, because they’re very specialised and therefore quite expensive. UN Classes 1 & 7 EACH require one whole day of teaching and a separate exam.

Teaching hours for UN Classes 2,3,4,5,6,8 &9:

Class 2: 1.5hrs
Class 3: 1.5hrs
Classes 4,5,6,8 &9 45mins EACH.

To give yourself the best shot at an ADR job, I’d suggest that you take: Core, Packages and UN Classes 2,3,4,5,6,8&9 which can be done (including exams) in 3.5 days.

I hope that helps.

thanks for the info dave, ill save this to my computer for when i do consider doing it. i have been thinking about doing my c&E since passing C, i pull a caravan alot but recently went to a bigger car which would take me over weight limits, so rather than pay £500 for B&E it would make sense to go for C&E for £800 and have the availablility of both Catagorys on my license,

Hi mate, yes that’s true… but,

Did you know that you can do your ADR at any time??

ADR only links to your DVLA driver number, NOT your driving entitlement…

That means that you can take your ADR, then go to work with it whilst you save some money for taking the C+E.
After you do your driving licence upgrade, your ADR follows you automatically and needs no further action on your part.

hi , no did not know that , my training place say book a cat c and C&E togeather and get ADR free, well i did not book togeather i did my C" there and im going to book for C&E in next few weeks and be cheeky and ask for the Free ADR since i will have been there for both. Hi mate, There’s no legal linkage between an LGV driving course and ADR, so I’m guessing that it’s some kind of special offer or promotion that the training school have devised.

Of course, we all know that there’s no such thing as a free ADR course, because even if the instructor is working for nothing (unlikely) the exam marking fees will still have to be paid by the provider to SQA. I’d say that’s somewhere between £100 - £200, depending on which modules and exam route the provider chooses.

I hope you get your ‘free’ ADR course, but let us know if you don’t??
