2 axle tractors at 44 ton

im new to LGV’s having just passed my class one last week

Why is it that UK 2 axle tractors cannot pull 44 tons like others in europe
Is this something that is due to change, it just seems odd that they have a design GTW & cant pull up to that weight

Unlikely to change.
And just to change your perceptions…
The 2 axle unit I’m in right now (on Belgian plates btw) is registered to pull 44 tonnes in Belgium/Holland only. Pretty sure it’s 40t gross in German as well as the UK.

And France!

There are some combinations, (Belgium I think) that have 4x2 units and four / quad axle trailers. Ones I’ve seen were container trailers. Whether they would be legal here at full weight I don’t know.

The Benelux have some odd rules on weights and axle-layouts that don’t exist in most other places in Europe. I can haul 44t on 5 axles there, or rent a 5 axle 50 tonne gross rigid instead.
Belgium and Holland are oddities as far as that goes, so don’t hang too much on that.

What’s the maximum weight a 2 axle tractor can pull in the UK then? Presumably it’s different if you have a 2 axle or 3 axle trailer?

They evened up the disparity between the UK and Europe, which is the reason we got 6 wheelers in the first place. the law used to be 38000 on 5 here and 44 tonne on 6 for intermodal. Then a bit of sense said that we could run at 40 tonne on 5 like France, Germany Spain.

Have you ever loaded out of “COORS” @ B-O-T ■■?

If your UK, the questions regarding your legal gross weight / how many axles ect, are quiet intimidating, if your a “NOBBY”, on 5 axles, NO PROBLEM.

24 Pallets on the head board, bloody heavy, [loaded very quickly], no questions asked of our french brothers.

Their drive axle airbags looked to be struggling to cope IMO :open_mouth:

Its not as if they catching a train to get to the port, its the deeply rutted A38 innit

All the Brits on 6 axles, the French all on 5.

The problem with that is the French run with 13.5 tonne on the drive axle, where we are limited to 10.5 tonne.

We have the same problem if we pick up a trailer loaded by a French driver, they do not all understand that the UK is still in the dark ages
