Truck Dealers of the 1970s/1980S

Larry… Houseleys to the right of Bloomer Holts wood yard do you remember it from this.

Anyone remember Pibroch Motors on Briscoe Lane another Dodge agent next to Phillips Park fire station Newton Heath, still there but now Enza motors Mercedes agent.

Stanfield

The place on Briscoe lane I knew as CGL, maybe that was just a trading name, I went into the meat market opposite countless times up to the early 80’s so should really remember. The Grimshaws you mention were also American car dealers till the early 70’s when they seem to start selling any make for a while, the primary school I went to during the 60’s was opposite their storage area on Highfield road though I only ever saw Vauxhalls being delivered.
A few more: Harith Trafford Park ERF
Kennings Cheetham Hill BMC&Guy
Frank Needham Broughton Foden and Merc
Nunns Broughton Ford
Tom Mellor Rochdale Ford
Tom Garner Knott Mill Commer
Hills Piccadilly Seddon did this become Hills Chadderton and was earlier Hills Diesels
Saviem Trafford Park, was this Tillotsons old place?

Yes, MRM, there was a Mack agent in Bolton, and lasted several years. Cannot for the life of me remember the name of it though.

Gingerfold was it CTS or CST as I think it was just initials then Mack distributors Bolton

cheers Johnnie

I think that the initials T and S were in there somewhere, but it might have been LTS (Lancashire Truck Services??). Kenny Harvey called in for a brew just after 6 this morning, but he couldn’t remember it either. He did mention that either them, or someone else in Bolton dabbled in White trucks for a time, I certainly recall Thomas Harwood running a couple of Whites, remembered for their very poor steering locks.

Can anyone remember who the Commer / Rootes Group dealer was in Manchester?

Dodge seems to have been very well represented in the North West. But they were popular back in the day.

There were some excellent parts only dealers or service and parts dealers often in tucked away places. The most well known in the area being W H Gatward in Hope st Maidstone who were long term full AEC dealers. I worked for Transport and Refrigeration services in Smither’s Lane East Peckham (near Paddock wood) and also North Farm Tunbridge Wells who were Foden agents. There was also Arnold Motors in the same village and formerly in the same premises in Smither’s Lane who were Shelvoke and Drewry, but who had also been Gardner and IIRC Foden agents before giving up the heavy side.

Ditton Service station on the A20 were Bedford parts dealers to whom people came from miles away rather than use the lamentable Drake and Fletcher in Maidstone. In Tonbridge there was Baker East who were Bedford service agents who again benefited from Drake and Fletcher’s failings.

There was also these in Nutfield whose name escapes me but who held Dodge and Commer parts which the far bigger Rawsons in Tunbridge Wells just didn’t. They likewise had customers from way outside their area.

As Boden mentioned above, Tom Garner at Knott Mill rings a bell but now I am thinking was there a dealer called Rylands. And another name that has just come to mind from the sixties was John Wallwork Volvo but I have a feeling that they only sold cars at the time, not trucks.

Hiya Steve, I mentioned Rylands a few posts ago. If I remember correctly Chatfields on Th’old road was Rylands, pretty sure it was advertised on the railway bridge.
Here’s a pic of my Dad in his last wagon taken in that yard before it was Chatfields. Think it was mid 80s before it became Chatfields.

Ray

In our area we had Barlow and Hodgkinsons at Biggin who supplied Foden spares and had their own haulage company, if they didn’t have the part in stock they would rob one off of one of the several new chassis cabs they had standing in their yard waiting to join their haulage fleet. You usually had to clean the rust off though! Kniftons were MAN dealers. Before my time here was Reg Knowles at Tansley, Platts (Rootes and Thorneycroft) in Matlock and Cromford Motors (at Cromford! ) who were Bedford agents. Also Kennings in Matlock, BMC, and Toft Brothers and Tomlinson at Darley Dale who were Gardner specialists.

Pete.

Sorry about that Ray  there must of been a slight senior moment there. :unamused:
Another one was Brighouse Commercials just off the M62 who were E.R.F. agents, are they still going ?

Regards Steve.

When I used to have any minor problems the firm I worked for in the 50/60s Had an account with Housleys, IIRC Their foremans name was Bill, plus the were all a good set of lads I remember the Bedford I drove with a Perkins P6 in the injector pipes were very troublesome, & they fitted a clamp to help them from breaking, The also gave me a Seagreen fule pipe repair hose, In fact I may still have one in my garage somewhere, Regards Larry.

Foden dealer on Westinghouse Road, Trafford Park, in what is now Brenntag Chemicals. They eventually moved to Duncan Street at Salford as part of Otis Transport in the Duncantransrail complex which is now signed as Creative Logistics.
The MAN dealer was at the corner of Barton Dock Road and Ashburton Road in Trafford Park which is now B&Q. Leyland was on the opposite corner on and off for years which was DAF recently.
Woodwards Leyland was on Windsor Street, Salford where Cousins Furniture facing the A57 is now.
