I’m sure in missing something here, sure if you’ve not put it on rest before you pull your card for the night then the tacho will be recording o/w. But that’s the tacho, not your card?

Exactly, it doesn’t matter what mode the head unit is on when your card is not in it. The vehicle could be getting used during that time.
It’s what you enter manually when you insert the card that records activities in the gap between the card being removed and inserted.
