Ahum… going back on-topic again…

Were these sold as Saviem’s too? Never saw one with a Saviem badge before…

Saviem started commercialising the bonneted MANs from the late sixties to 1980, I think, when they broke the commercial agreements to merge with Berliet. MAN continued to produce this model for some ten years. This is an early model with round headlamps. They were rather rough to drive.

Cheers for the info Paul

Most were 6x4 painted with the “blue” Saviem. This one has the new bonnet which coud be open.

Just read an article about the Volvo F86, and not the F86 we all know, but the Portuguese version of the F88/89 (see attached photos, NMP). Who knows more about it?

You can never know it all, and I’ve just seen another thing about which I know nothing. All I can guess is that there were local content rules in Portugal at the time. If you look closely, most of the panels are completely different to a normal 89.

That was indeed the reason for the somewhat alternative look Anorak, I’m wondering if Fergie or MaggieD ever encountered these exotic Volvo’s when they went southbound back in the day?

Mercedes-Benz 508D, Reg.No. EJP 499V was a van that I had in the
early 1980s, and it was one of the nicest vehicles that I ever drove.
I think that the first picture has been seen before on another thread.
The location is on a beach near Carnac in Brittany in June 1985, after
doing my last of 5 deliveries to campsites owned by Eurocamp. I am
stood in front of the van in the first picture, the chap in the second
picture is David Roberts, my nephew, who at the time was a Police
Officer with Greater Manchester Police, and was enjoying a few days
leave. The next stop was Roscoff for the Brittany Ferries night sailing
to Plymouth. The outward journey was a full vanload of camping
equipment from Bradburn Camping at Wigan, one of Eurocamps suppliers,
and delivered to a transport depot at Carquefou, near Nantes, where
I loaded the 5 drops mentioned above. We sailed on “Tregastel” on
both the outward and return journeys. Click on photo for better image.

Regards, Ray Smyth.

The Bombeiros tanker looks like it has the early front hubs/wheel centres, the closely spaced wheel studs, can’t really tell even with my glasses on! but has the plastic grill?
As anorak says a lot of the cab panels are different making the cab look narrower.

Some more from the Bombeiros fleet Patrick, even a V8 for Johnny!
Seems a lot of overhang on that stepframe Patrick, need to put your trailer brakes on when loading that!

It does look narrower indeed Pete, not sure if they used the same dimensions, or if they’ve opted for the Swiss option…? Nowt wrong with your eyes mate, I’ve been studying that same pic through binoculars for days now, with the same result!

Nice ones mate, I’m sure Herr Sutherland is going to be chuffed with that photo of that mighty Teutonic engineered V8!

That stepframe reminds me of a trailer we’ve got in the fleet, there are legs at the back end that you have to pull out when you’re either loading or tipping. However, that trailer mostly gets used to haul RR engines with, so those legs aren’t being used very often, can be a bit of an experience when you’re tipping a machine without those legs

Just found this one on a French forum. The radiator grille and cast iron front hubs could make it an Lancia. I’d say the picture was taken during WW II, and this RHD truck is powered by a gas generator.

Another Bernard from a few years ago…

Auto Sueco built Volvo in CKD in Porto suburb, but some legislation forced them to have a minus of home-made components , so the F 86 had ’ nt the same cab as in North Europe.
In the same manner ,they also built a seldom N10 with a N 88 cab.
One really Lusitanian F 86 which had the same dash-board as the original F 86, must seek a picture…

The bad picture I took, in 1989 travelling in Portugal, of the N 10 I spoke before.

Thank you Michel, very interesting indeed
