Morning Dean.

The Merc artic carrying steel is one of Consolidated Land Services from Scunthorpe, they had a big fleet at one time, running out of the steel works,as well as tankers under the Tanker Hire name. They bought out a haulier in South Wales - could have been S Protheroe but not 100% sure about that.CLS was formed by the amalgamation of H and L Transport Workington and North Lincs Haulage Scunthorpe.

Hi CHris ,yes it was indeed S Protheroe ,regards Keith

Thanks David, that’s a name I remember from years ago. Did they have a place in Scunthorpe on recovery work and maybe AEC agents?

They were an ERF agent in East Anglia,as it was then, not sure if in Scunthorpe or if AEC agent too,but I doubt it,but they were involved with selling and servicing ERF’s for sure.

MrJake:
New Milton Sand & Ballast Scania still going strong.
My very first ‘official’ HGV driving job in 1965 was for a subby (E.Dennet&Sons) working for New Milton Sand and Ballast out of their Efford (Lymington) gravel pit, 8 loads a day to Mudeford Gravel at their washery at Hinton (by a pub called 'The Cat and Fiddle) the start of the slippery slope of nearly 50 years on the road.

Hello “Mr Jake” cant remember there place at Hinton, but they are a fairly big concern now with there
depot in New Milton. If you are local you will know that the “Cat and Fiddle” pub is still there. Its nice that
a pub still has its original name as they seem to re name old pubs now once they have done a refit !

Had a rethink and it wasn’t Arthur’s (possibly ■■■■ Bunting?) but it doesn’t really matter! At one time, when I was workshop based, I knew all the reg numbers, but we did have a massive intake of V registrations in both tippers/tankers/Foden and Sed Ak chassis/Gardner and Rolls engines so it was a job keeping up with it all! Vehicles were replaced every six years back then, although the actual powder tanks usually went to Metalair at Sutton Bridge for reconditioning before being transferred to a new chassis along with the rams and hydraulic oil tank and the old chassis/cabs were then sold off, often to tipper operators for another hard life. It was a long time ago now…

Chris Miller’s ‘Bonzo Bear’.

Operated by Chris Miller of Preston this 1978 registered Mack F700 Reg No NFV 803T, was nicknamed ‘Bonzo Bear’,
Here’s an early shot of it before it had any sign writing traveling along Huddersfield ring road in late 1978 during delivery of one of the 200 ton main Inlet valves destined for the Dinorwig Hydro Electric power station in North Wales.

This shot was taken in 1979 on the A62 heading West towards Oldham at Delph Station crossroads with ‘Bonzo’ about to start the long assent up to Scouthead.
At the rear is Chris Millers Volvo F88 Reg No PHY 21M to help push the load which was another 200 ton main Inlet valve destined for the Dinorwig Hydro Electric power station in North Wales.

Half way up the long assent from Delph to Scouthead on the A62.

After Chris Miller packed in ‘Bonzo Bear’ was exported to Kenya but has now returned to the UK
for restoration and is seen here in June 2017 after being collected at the docks by Fagan & Whalley
