Old livestock hauliers shropshire

The Cadwallader place at Chester was up for sale some years ago, the wagons were parked on the left of the lane opposite the farmhouse which now seems to be a private house and the wagon parking area covered over.

I done a trip to portugal along with one of crowthers drivers he was driving a 81 scania lorry and drag. Im sorry I cant remember his name old age dont come alone. Also where is the big lad who drove the 142 for parrys ? I used to load lambs around shropshire normaly at 2 or 3 in the morning.
Best regards Basher one of the operatives of gilders guided tours

Can’t say I’ve ever seen that smart ERF but David Kidd is running a small fleet of large livestock lorries from the opposite end of Macclesfield these days, next to the Shell service station at Lyme Green on London Road. I’ll trundle up there and get some photos if anyone’s interested, although it may be more appropriate to post them on the Cheshire Hauliers’ thread.

All the markets from my youth have gone it seems - Newcastle u Lyme (Monday) Congleton (Tuesday) Leek (Wednesday) Banbury (Thursday) Beeston (Friday) and Uttoxeter (Saturday) - we also went to Chelford on a Thursday and Mold on a Friday - can’t remember which day Crewe was - nearly all bloody housing estates or supermarkets now

crewe was on a monday tuesday congleton and leek, chester was on wednesday i think, chelford on a thursday and beeston on a friday,we went to those old markets every week, sadley most have gone

Hi Gaz023, seeing your posting of the S.J. Morris of Llansantfraid Leyland (a Comet I think) reminds me of starting my career in haulage driving a similar Comet on livestock haulage for Jim Lawson of Cockermouth back in August 1962 as a 21 year old shortly after getting the Comet RAO 36 I was promoted to a brand new LAD cabbed Albion Clydesdale. One evening the dealer we haulaed for informed me that tonights load of lambs from ■■■■■■■ were down to Mid Wales, when I asked exactly where he replied its sounds something like Lamb Fries ■■? After studying the map we spied Llansantfraid and decided that this must be the place. Off I set about 2.00 am from Cockermouth no motorways to speak of then eventually arriving at Llansantfraid south end about 8 am. My instructions were to phone Ivor Jones sheep dealer, on looking in gthe phone book I discovered several pages of Jones looking puzzled the lady from the nearby shop / post office asked what I was looking for ? As soon as I explaine said she exclaimed she knew him and promptly phoned him for me, I then had to take the fork road there for about two miles where a lad would meet me in a van and show me which field to unload the sheep into which I duly did. Two years ago when staying in a self catering cottage near Llanfair Caerinion on that same road that passes through Meifod the lady who owned the cottage said her late husband Brian Jones also drove livestock wagons in the area, does anyone remember Brian ? I believe he drove for a local dealer. Just for old times sake I went back to Llansantfraid and retraced my footsteps back to that field gate first seen 52 years earlier.

Hi Leyland 600
Late fifties early sixties we used to take fat sheep over to Preston from the old Newcastle Mart. This was every Monday night and the dealer was called John Hindmarsh. I was only a kid at the time so not sure where exactly in Preston the sheep went to and where the dealer came from.
Just another useless memory. Tyneside

Hi Tyneside, I know where the old Newcastle mart was just because I used to arrive at Marlborogh Crecent off the United bus from Carlisle back in the 1950s en route to Blyth as a boy unaccompanied. I then got a trolleybus from Central Station to The Haymarket bus stand then any one of four United services to Blyth. In my livestock days I never visited Preston mart just passed through on my way to the Stanley Abbatoir at Liverpool, yeuk I can still smell it 54 years on. I also travelled along the new Preston M6 motorway from Broughton to Bamber Bridge en route to Banbury with sheep a regular job which took 9 hours each way back then in my then new LAD cabbed Albion Clydesdale. No tachographs then just good old paper log sheets filled in with a pencil the only essential item needed was a rubber !! Doon and back home in a oner.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
