House of Fraser

Cosmic:
For those people having a pop at Mike Ashley, maybe you just don’t get it? House of Fraser - it went bust. Out of business. Gone the same way as Poundworld, Toys R Us, Maplin, Woolworths, Palmer & Harvey… etc. Now just because someone actually put their hand in their pocket to acquire certain parts of the business and keep it going, it seems to confuse all the thickheads who think he is somehow responsible for the failed company. Erm no. If you buy a vehicle from a salvage auction, you don’t pay the previous owners debts for him, do you?

This guy bought the name and logo etc as well, practically a going concern, different to buying a van at auction.

That much of a going concern that it was in administration…

I am no fan of his but saying that he should buy the debts isn’t realistic. It would have been allowed to fold and everyone lose their jobs. Maybe he will make some money out of it but maybe he won’t. A lot of people have a job still which is better than it would have been

+1 got to agree with you, if he didnt buy it, house of frazer would be gone. Yes he is a greedy fat ahole but good at making businesses work. But I think a lot of the workers will be thinking its like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire

I am sure a lot will leave as it will change but at least they have a job while they look. I never went in there but imagine its like debenhams where there are more staff than customers and that can’t compete with online prices these days

He will make money out of it, make no mistake, he will have made sure of that before he acted, with all his advisors he has around him and got it for a song. (In the terms of his world not ours)
He has good business acumen, and certainly is not an idiot.

As for the ‘‘fat a hole’’ you said, I can’t argue.

Mike Ashley avoiding spending money?

As a footie fan I’ve suffered ten years of it so it comes as no surprise to me. You’ll soon associate the House of Fraser brand with low quality items like he sells in the rest of his “retail empire” or whatever it’s called.

Yep but why is he so rich he hates spending money is a good business man who should stay to of football or Newcastle at least also stop the rumours that he is selling as he is not he has no interest in doing so

He will buy failing retail give people jobs on worse that they were yep some will close some will stay but they will change

If his niche is buying up failed businesses cheap, I don’t know why he doesn’t just buy Sunderland, and run those lot instead (another failing disaster) and [zb] off from Newcastle for good. :bulb:

He is a classic example of a rich Victorian style greedy employer who makes much of his money by exploiting his workforce.
Did anybody else see that doc on telly about the Sports Direct zero hours place in Yorks, where they even have to ask permission to go to the bog ffs.
Fat greedy exploitative [zb] :smiling_imp: .

A lot of us Newcastle supporters wish he would just leave us alone & yep would have been better if he had bought 5under1and but John Hall & Freddie Shepard should never have sold to him

Have a read of ‘‘The Mag’s’’ take on it.
No intention of selling as long as he owns Sports Direct, so here’s to another x no of years of mediocrity. :smiling_imp:

Just been announced on ITV news that 600 jobs on the House of Fraser contract are to go at XPO :frowning:

Yep. Owed £30million by H of F.
Wonder who will bid for the warehousing and distribution work from the “New H of F”?
What sort of rates would they look for from a possibly shaky client?
I hope Mr Ashley doesn’t learn from the playbook of Philip Green who came along to rescue BHS…

For every Phillip Green and Phoenix (remember Longbridge), there is a Wesfarmers.

The Australian owner of Homebase sold the DIY chain for just £1 yesterday – taking its losses since buying the firm two years ago to nearly £740 million.

In a humiliating retreat from the UK, Wesfarmers flogged the home improvement chain to turnaround specialist Hilco, which already owns HMV.

The deal brought the curtain down on one of the most disastrous retail acquisitions of all time and took Wesfarmers’ losses since buying Homebase for £340 million in 2016 to £738 million.

Might be a good time to buy shared in Mulberry though.

There are good and honourable business people out there.
So long as they are in competition with selfish r’soles and our Govs adopt a “laissez faire” attitude expecting markets and big business to “self regulate”… well, i don’t need to finish that sentence.
But I hope with you that any package rescuing the largest possible number of decent jobs succeeds.

Whilst being a smidgeon harshly worded (bit rich for me I know!) but the general point is correct
