Greenwoods transport

Dave Trew, I think he used to keep racing pigeons. He moved out of town to Essex, not sure where.

Steve he worked for us till we packed up in 2005 he was with for about 6 years then little while ago Peter was talking to him out in our yard he was doing a bit on Motorways he was still funny then real grafter.

Ken he wasn’t there when i was there though was he? Mind you we never got a chance to socialise to busy grafting lol.

I have a lot of good memories of Greenwoods running up and down to Hoddesdon with my dad Ian Mackenzie in his AEC Mandator then S80 foden and the luxury of a Daf 2800 daycab the last lorry he drove for Greenwoods before him and my uncle Billy Mcinnes were made redundent when Greenwoods were taken over by the Heron Group.Sadly my dad passed away in 1997 a month before he was due to retire from TDG.My uncle Billy passed away in March this year at the grand age of 83 having not long retired from Taxi Driving.Nice to see so many names i recognise from my child hood.

Stefluc:
Gazza,
What was your old mans name my brother who worked in the workshops was called Bruno,I worked there part time during the school holidays helping with the Libbys contract and the Ferrymasters hand balling the trailers when they came in,ask your old man if he remembers any of the fitters.
Stefluc

Stefluc, not sure when but my wifes uncle drove for the Warrington depot, Tommy Burton (he could look after himself - the oldest of 13 siblings) Tom will be in his early 70’s now. Also, I think John Riley may have worked there late 70’s early 80’s. Another big lad who I think used to work on the fairgrounds (from Northwich originally IIRC) I worked for Westerns at the back of their yard and I’m sure they used to lend each other drivers when they were stuck (does that still happen?)

I may be wrong but I`am sure that the Warrington depot was the base of a company named Jay~Pee Transport who ran a very nice fleet of Fodens and were taken over by Greenwoods .

Steve.

Hi Steve,
Yes thats right my uncle Billy done the Aberdeen run backloading paper reels from Muggiemoss papaermill in Aberdeen to Erith and Robertsbridge and my Dad done the Glasgow run and backloaded general from Greenwoods Glasgow Depot at Downiebrae Road in Rutherglen.I dont have many memories of the Edmonton Depot but i do remember that they both stayed with old Mrs Watson in Edmonton when they were down there for many years. There was another guy that lived near us in Falkirk called Jerry Williams he drove a four wheeler Dodge and done the Inverness run.

Regards
Stuart.

my dad jim brennan drove for greenwoods they used to have a office on Newcastle quayside he used to do a changeover at Doncaster and deliver the magazines to w.h.smith depots on the way back north.

Hi. Colin. I was at Hoddesdon depot in the 70,s And drove AEC Mercurys until the Leyland Clydesdale come in. At the time I lived in Mullion Cornwall and was on the Penzance run with a return load of china clay. As you say its sad what you remember I drove DLD653J which was Bob Sarsons motor REV740R first Leyland then finished up with AEV312S.HOW BLOODY SAD. I moved back up to Essex and drove for Parcelforce and delivered in Southend. One day I delivered to a steel stockholders in Shoebury and walked straight into Jeff Baker. The last I heard he left there and moved to Ely in Cambridge. I am like you now “retired” and moved to Wells in Somerset, loving every day. I can still remember most of the drivers and the good times with a great crew. Greenwoods was a great firm to work for, I have worked for some after that but it was not the same. The only thing I don’t miss is the sheeting and roping, my hands are too soft now. I am on facebook and maybe try to keep in touch. You would probably remember me as Ginger Sarjant but my first name is Marcel( that’s why they called me Ginger). Keep well and lets hope some more oldies get in touch.

My late brother’s mate used to drive a Foden out of Warboys. His name was Tommy Slack. Very fussy about keeping what he referred to as his “sturdy Foden” clean as I remember.

Colin H:
I worked for Greenwoods Transport at Hoddesdon, started at Pegamoid rd Edmonton and moved on to Hoddesdon.

If my memory serves me well I started in 1973 and took redundancy in 1985. Working with me then were :- Dave Sparks, Jeff Baker, Teddy Wolfe, Mickey Parker, Brian Jeal (aka Blossum), Billy Spence, Pete Harris ( father to Steve Harris of Iron Maiden fame ), Brian Slow, Phil Reid, Pat Jennings Trevor Harris, Billy Mcinnes, Ian Mcenzie, John Sellings, Mick Revel, Phil Hill, Alan Leal and lots more who I just cant remember.

I started out with a rigid and then moved on to the artics in the later years doing the Berwick, Perth and Inverness run meeting up with the other guys in Peterhead to load for home.

How sad is this I remember 2 of the trucks I drove, a Foden with a 250 ■■■■■■■ MHK 955P, and for my last 5 years service drove a Daf 2800 PNO 405V.

Be nice to hear from anyone who remembers those days, I do know that some of these names are no longer with us. I am retired now living on the Isle of Wight for the last 8 years.

Colin Hollingworth. 28/12/2012

Hi Colin, I was there in the '80s. I started when I was 18 as a steam cleaner getting the trucks and trailers ready for the MOT, I even remember stem cleaning your Daf PNO 405V! :open_mouth: I also did the evening run to the London stations for short deliveries that went by red Star. I remember a lot of the names and often did the London run on a Monday with a few of them. My dad worked there ( Albert Galvin ) but most people called him Bill ! when I was a kid in the '70s and loved going out with him learning to rope and sheet and even getting a taste of driving the lorry… he drove the Mercury’s then the Clydesdale and ended up with a Seddon Atkinson.

I remember Dave Sparks asking me how old I was, they wanted to put me through my class 1 but I was too young! I ended up working in the transport office with Alan and George, I can still see all the drivers names up on the board! do you remember Brender in the canteen? and the guy with one leg who worked on the Diesel pump? ! wish I could remember he’s name!

I was there when it closed after being taken over by the Lex group.
Ian Galvin

Ian, I remember your Dad, nice man. The guy with one leg was Jack, he used to live in a shack in Dobbs Weir Road. He also used to do gate security before a specialist firm was employed

Stuart, I remember Billie and Ian well, tough men who didn’t suffer fools easily. I remember your Uncle telling me the story of how Ian spanked a neighbour with a shovel during an argument. I couldn’t always understand what they were saying especially if Billie was annoyed or if he was telling stories during a session in The Bell or Fish and Eels and remember how Billie would take real offence if someone turned down the offer of a scotch. Jerry Elliot was a really small guy wasn’t he, his nickname in the depot was “Rocket Shoulders” as his neck seemed to merge with his arms. Sorry to hear of Billie and Ian’s passing Stuart, I remember them with a smile.

my dads name was colin finn he started at the hoddesdon depot soon after they moved from Edmonton… I remember some of the names mentioned mick parker sadly no longer with us who was a good friend of dads… dad started with an aec often had a seddon or Leyland clydsdale until he was given one of the fiats that greenwoods bought kvx288v so long ago but I can still remember it well. I always went with dad as soon as school holidays allowed… he had the fiat until he moved on to the dafs in about 82 he started with one of the day cabs which if memory serves me right belong to blue dart on contract… he then had mhg163t when greenwoods got the ipc contract and got that after the previous driver moved over to a new daf… he was there till he got made redundant in 85 he still mantains now that greenwoods was one of the best jobs he ever had… I still think back to the days I went with him… never got to go on the Glasgow run but as a twist my current girlfriend and soon to be wife lives not far from rutherglen and I often go through there in the car… dad still talks about his time at grenwoods and the blokes he worked along side with fond memeries…

Hi Bings Gang,
Was The Bell the pub in Hoddesdon were they stayed with the huge Rottweiler i remember from my trips down the road as a kid? I used to get billy wound up over a few drinks about how it took them all week to go to London and back, as you can imagine that used to get him going!!! I miss them both and there tales of bygone days when drivers were drivers and not just steering wheel attendants. I blame them for the 25 years ive spent driving lorries but to be honest i wouldn’t have changed a thing. Stuart

Hi Stuart, yes that was the Bell, used to be my local, a proper rough house at times
I drive a Merc as chauffeur now and find myself on the M25 or in London daily, I often think of the drivers of old and how much easier it is today, mind you, 50% of the trucks I see have foreign plates today.
Merry Christmas!

Hi Samual,

You are correct about the ex Blue dart daycab Dafs as my dad got a V reg one to replace his Foden SEV738R and the difference in comfort and power was night and day. Rutherglen is not to far from Greenwoods depot in Downiebrae Road which is still there right on the banks of the river clyde next to the new Tesco store,im sure your dad would have been in there a few times on his trips up to Glasgow.

There was a guy who lived near me in northwich called Ron horth,he ran out of the warrington yard a big youth he was !

Hello Everybody
My Dad Phil Jennings drove for Greenwoods when they where still home counties running out of Hainault before they changed to Greenwoods and went to pegamoid road then onto hoddesdon, I remember names like blossom, Dicky fenton (who I bumped into in henrietta st in london in 86, thanks for taking me and Ian for to buy our west ham and arsenal kits when we were kids) Ray Field, Colin Harding and Bob Richards who I picked up in my cab in southend 24 years after i last saw him and have the pleasure of bumping into every now and then, He’s just retired, happy retirement Bob.
Dad’s Lorry was an brown bedford then an AEC, HUC614K, then a leyland lynx I cant remember the others, but I’ll never forget sleeping on the engine cover from the age of 2, Dad used to love me and my brother Ian going out with him, especially when we were old enough to sheet and rope, the work was hard, but the comics were a plenty, there was mate of dad’s who used to live in looe in cornwall.
Sadly dad died in 89 but I know that the best years of his life were working at Greenwoods, he had some good mates there and I have some very fond memories of those green and white lorries with the orange fuel tank.
