We have a drop along there, i must have passed it loads of times and didnt know it was there
I never went over Shap in a truck but did go up to the memorial in my old LDV van about four years ago and it was looking rather faded. Not surprising given the weather up there though! My old dad used it regularly in the fifties on his run from Reading to Fort William, Foden eight legger on Thermalite, loaded up and empty back at 20 mph which was the speed limit then for anything over 3 tons unladen. He left home on monday and returned on friday or saturday, loaded again for monday and then had to grease the truck as well. 
I never saw much of him as he was at work or asleep. Digs were pre-booked on route though. He would be amazed at modern trucking!
