Route advice needed

lost me truckers map on my final week of trade plating and been lucky since to be on main runs everywhere.

no more!

tomorrow I’m off to holmfirth (2 drops), Wigan and Darwen. Holmfirth I’m predicting will have a few nice twisty roads with high gradients, and low bridges to trip me up on with planning… wigan I know has a few low bridges and darwen I have no idea.

don’t have final addresses yet, nor even what I’m carrying (agency monkey, I’m a mushroom to be kept in the dark, and fed… you know the rest).

so, anyone recommend a route into holmfirth from scunny, and point out any low bridges?

A possible route (pretty much direct) from Scunny could be:

M181, M180 towards Doncaster
M180 junc M18 take 1st exit slip road onto M18 south
M18 south to junc with M1, take northbound M1
M1 leave at J35a, for A616 Manchester
A616 junc with A629, continue onto A629
A629 to junc with A635 (Penistone Road) - continue onto A635…

…you’re heading into Holmfirth now…

It’s been a while since I’ve been over that way so as far as bridges are concerned maybe someone else can help :question:

i agree with the route above and likewise it`s been a while but cant remember any low bridges in holmfirth or darwen.not too sure about wigan though.

was thinking of that route but couldn’t decide between that, hooking onto M1 from M62, or even M62 to huddersfield and down.

As far as I can recall, there are no bridges to worry about, just dippy bits here and there,

Darwen on the A666 north of Bolton? from there go south on A666 into Bolton, turn right at the pineapple pub A38 past Asda on left and aim to x over the M61 by Reebok stadium Wigan via Haigh Hall pretty sure theres no low stuff

Still all a very scenic day out makes the job worth while(if sunny)

There is no low bridges on this route.
This will take you into the centre of holmfirth.

The only 2 bridges in wigan to worry about are Prescott st and miry lane but i doubt you’ll go near them.

If your coming from darwen to wigan and you use the M61 and come off at the reebok stadium (J6) then just watch yourself as you go over the canal bridge at new springs as its a very nasty r/h bend and theres a gatso about a mile further just round a bend

I’m pretty sure routes into penistone have low bridges on them, aalthough an alternative route is sign posted

ended up they gave me a pic-up in the boonies beforehand and the collection was in fact meltham, a bit closer up to the M62 so I dropped down through huddersfield.
