Northwest Trucks

My first job was a a Breadman Mothers Pride at Skerton Road Old Trafford, we drove Commer Karriers, long nosed Morris Austins, Custom cabs and threepenny bit cabs FG series 1965-1968. I worked for Smiths of Eccles from 1968-1972. Boss, Sammy Nield had taken me on. They were based at Taylors Road Urmston Manchester. I started on an old Bedford then progressed to luxury an ERF A series. 1972-1974 I worked for Williames Transport Group, Warren Road Trafford Park. They were an Irish Groupage company. The vans were Ford Custom cabs 15 tonners, the tractor units were 32 tonners AEC Mandaters Irish reg plates. We used to travel from Fishguard to Rosslare. Stranraer to Larne. 1974 I worked for MAT Transport MIFT Trafford Park. This was part of Brinks MAT. This was container and Tilt work. Most of my nights out were at Hull depot. 1975-1982 was at Humko Products (Kraft Foods) Westinghouse Road Trafford Park. Tanker work, delivery of hot edible oils throughout the UK and southern Ireland. 1982-1985 I worked for Smith and Robinson Taylors Road Urmston; this was Tanker work, Chemicals. This was the elite for pay, conditions and fantastic bunch of drivers. I moved to Norfolk 1985 working for the Ministry of Defence as a Mechanical Transport Flight Specialist (Lorry Driver) based at RAF Marham. visited Sardinia, Germany, Italy, normally working with the Tornado squadrons on exercise which could be a few weeks at a time. These were the best days of my driving career. I retired 2004, still live in Norfolk. My wife said to me I should keep those wheels turning even in retirement. She has put me in charge of the Hoover! and wheelbarrow!.
