Salary? ?.?

Hi, I’m looking to change careers to class 1 driving, just doing some research of the role and the industry is the most elusive for finding out what an expected salary is  ! I’ve seen pay from less than a shelf stacker to over 40 grand  ! So which is it…?
So any chance people can give me an idea of what their on? Low to top end and hours worked?

Also the hours in a working day is proving just as difficult to find out- it’s 9 hours ‘Driving’ per day with an increase for 2 days if need be right- So do you all actually drive 9 hours per day? Or mostly getting loaded/unloaded? And I’m guessing you still get paid per hour for not driving, stuck in traffic, breaks, customer depot etc? If you could give me an idea of this it would be great…

It all depends on the job you are doing so you need to be more specific

What type of day are you looking at doing?
Early starts,late finishes?
Trunking work?
Tramping?
Day work only?
Own account work or general haulage?

There are many parameters to the job that can determine pay.

I won’t really mind which job I’m doing- I know tramping higher paid than days etc.
Give me an idea of them all or what you all do, that will give s good insight into the industry.
IF you want a specific lets say days from Teesport with a company like Stobarts. Expected salary, hours?..

Don’t include your night out money or any bonus payment in anything .
Salary is your base money as you can’t depend on anything else
Tramping can work out a lot less than national min wage.
Every jobs different

It all depends which way you go as you have other factors to take into account.

I have had everything from 8.50ph to 14 quid. The hours are generally stupid long. HTH

Do a job search. That way you´ll see what the job is, the hours, and the pay for it.

By stupid long, I mean up at 2.30, start at 4, done at 7pm, home by 8, eat, sleep for a couple of hours (in bed by 9.30 if you’re lucky) back up again at 2.30

Of course, before I get jumped on, not all jobs are the same. I’m on 14 quid an hour where I am and I work exactly 8 hours and not a minute longer, start at 18:00 move trailers till 21:00 and watch YouTube till 03:00. But my job is a rarity, most jobs ain’t like it. And because I’m not on tacho, I’m free to work elsewhere on my days off for extra dollar.

I would like to go full time with a company not contacting. Day shift preferably.
Current 37.5 hour’s per week, £28000 basic. Annualised hours, mon-fri. Overtime puts it up to around 30K. What’s hgv class 1?

I think salary/hours are not simply disclosed in this industry and are very elusive which in-turn discourages allot of newbies entering the job… :unamused:

Not going to beat that in this industry me thinks

Full time perm job as newbie is not very likely - more likely to be on agency as and when needed

If there was a driver shortage then the situation might be very different

I’m willing to take a pay cut just wondering by how much  Like I say I have seen pay above and below mine so good to get an idea of what’s right from all your inputs…

With hours- If it’s 60 hours+ per week that’s fine for me if not driving 9 hours straight everyday… waiting around to load/unload but still getting paid for it is fine for me. If that’s the way it is

Many newbies first time jobs are working for companies like BRAKES where there is little driving but a lot of heavy cages etc

I think you’d do better finding firms advertising for drivers in your area and asking what they pay. It seems to be a question like how long is a peice of string?

I’ve noted job adverts offering anything from 22k up passed 30k. Would assume the more specialised the work the higher the pay.

For myself im class 2 at 32k but work hard for it and put in a lot of hours to boot most weeks.

Anywhere from 13-18 quid an hour for me. That’s as a self employed driver. If you want paye it would be a couple of quid less per hour.

If you want to earn a decent chunk to what Eddie does and work for brakes or someone like co-op who run class 1 but have you pulling cages. £36k for co-op to be home every night. Overtime if you go over about 9 hours a day. But hard work. Realistically if you took overtime you could get it up to £45k from what I’ve heard. Aldi/Lidl are other big payers but they have you working when not driving as well.

If you want to earn much more than that you would need to go specialised. Fuel tankers, car transporters, heavy haulage or even big crane type work. But those are not going to be open to you as a new pass.

Personally I’d rather earn slightly less and do nothing more than sit on cruise control pulling a fridge for a supermarket than pull cages around. But I’m lazy and money isn’t my biggest motivation.

Sam is pretty near me, so the wages are similar. Wouldn’t recommend Aldi, you have to tip yourself and the hours are long, choice is yours though, I wouldn’t go back to it. Can’t speak for Lidl, never worked for them. When I was at Aldi, it was 12.50 flat rate. Whether you take it is down to how desperate you are.

I know of one heavy haulage outfit near me that takes newbies. Most of their drivers they have taken from car to class 1. They seem to be the exception to the rule though

I’m in a similar situation to you. Currently in a job earning around similar as a manufacturing tech.
I’ve just passed class 2, mod4 left to do. But at some point moving onto class 1.
Looking at the job board does give a fair indication at levels of pay in the basic area. But obviously hours are noted down, it doesn’t seem to be in at a certain time leave at a certain time kind of industry, too many factors to add into the day traffic, tipping delays. The days could be long or short, which is something to think about, certainly had me thinking for awhile as a usual 8-4 job. Or regular shift work. I don’t think gonna find in this industry.
I’ve seen wages from as low as minimum wage upto 32k for class2, then similar for class 1 just the minimum seems to be around £10 an hour.
But surely if work the hours and lots of waiting round poa. Your weekly hour sheets could easily be 60+, which would make an okay wage, a decent end of week/month wage slip

Either people on this thread are on a wind-up or humans in general are returning to the sea :unamused:

£28k for 37.5 hrs…and then they want to become truck drivers  Others seem to WANT to sit in a cab playing on a phone whilst waiting to be tipped for 60 hours a week :open_mouth:

Truck driving is crap. You are thought of as crap by MOST people around you on the roads/mtorways. Goods in staff usually value a trodden in dog turd as more important than you. Small concrete waiting rooms with plastic chairs, filthy toilets, 10 men security knobs, spineless planners/managers who pander to every customers demand, the list goes on.

Work on between £9 and £10 per hour for general haulage days (class 1). But hey, you get to stay away from your friends & family for hours and hours and hours… At first when you pass your bendy ticket it’s great, but the novelty soon wears off.

So if you want to be a Billy big balls class 1 driver with a Yorkie in yer top pocket, go for it. But don’t start whining when your partner buggers off and you end up doing all the hours God sends :bulb:

I would always try to work for a company which pays by the hour or fixed rate for x amount of time per day, after that overtime rate per hour and extra on the weekends.

If you want to work 60 hrs/week and more

  • work for Stobarts, paid by the hour, 45 minutes break deducted per day. The rest is yours. May be not good rates but as a new driver they give you a start.

I hate salaried positions where you have to work all the hours god sends, get pushed and get 30 to 31k.
You can work 71 hrs Monday-Friday (Doing 3x15 hrs + 2x 13hrs legally and use POA/Break where ever you can)

Divide 31k by 52 and the result gets divided by 71.
That gives you a rough idea what your average pay is for a such a position.

  • In your case put the 28k and divide it like I described it.

But,
I may not like these kind of of salaried jobs but others love them, each to their own [emoji4]

My partner already buggered off before I got my licence back.
She also thought it was appropriate to throw 90% of my clothes away too.
That actually worked in my favour really. I only had my smartest trousers and shirts left. SO everywhere I go I have, well, me smartest stuff on.
She probably knew I was only a Class 2  and not a shi…, sorry, a Knight of the road  and she was not interested in staying to reap the 2nd class benefits.
