Your favourite structure/ object you pass

In the 80`s it was heading south running through the tunnels underneath Lyon and then past the refinery.

I always felt that I was on my way to the sunshine after that point, things seemed nicer, the weather warmer, the people more pleasent.

I loaded Nigel Mansell’s race fuel that he used in the British Grand Prix at that refinery sometime in the 1980’s and took it to Silverstone…I had orange boards for the truck but no hazardous certificate, can’t remember when that started but not for a few years after I did.

Quite a few for me
The Brecon Beacons
John O Groats,very peaceful
anywhere parked looking over the sea
Manchester Airport Departure lounge (off on me hols)
the rear of my w&d when its empty

going over the millau is quite enjoyable and through clermont ferrand all the hills and tunnels i find it far easier to stay alert than on normal mways bypasses doing it the other way i like limoges cahors and a really nice site is carcassone at night . on the west coast of france i like the bridge at rochefort the one when going north ends at the roundabout where the police college is . oh and over that way the ile de oleron is also quite awe enspiring . also like the fishing ports favourites being musselburgh aberdeen peterhead frazerburgh and in brittany concarneau .

I get quite a bit of day bulks work around the Lake District, it’s like being on holiday every day!
And there’s that lock-keeper’s cottage type place down on the left of the M6N J26-27, just as the sun’s coming up. Would be more picturesque if it didn’t have a motorway one side and a railway line the other!
Again, as the sun comes up, the twilight zone between J36-38 on the M6N.

And as a passenger? An oncoming double decker bus squeezing past when sat on the top deck (in the front seat, above the driver) of another double decker bus going over Tai Tam dam in Hong Kong. The buggers don’t slow down!

Not got a favourite but what is that blot on the landscape near the A34 not too far away from Kidlington?

Do you mean Kidlington Silo’s

Wartime Ministry of Food Silo built by Iti POWs been empty for as long as I can remember. The rail siding that fed it is now used as a stone siding for Hansons. The silos earmarked for demolition when a park and ride railway stations built as part of the reopening of the Oxford to Bletchley line.
Favourite object for me is Earlys chimney beside the old A40 in Witney. Coming down Oxford Hill into Cogges as a kid you knew you were home when you could see black smoke belching out of it. I still look for it today even though the mills shut and the chimney capped.

Gotta be this when coming up the M1,

Usually means it’ll not be long before I see the misery

My current favourite is the straw meerkat (not lifesize) in the field beside the A51 North of Nantwich. Almost worth going to see. Like when England won the Ashes in 2005 (there was that sculpture of a set of cricket wickets made of those large cylindrical haybales with the one word “Howzat?” on them beside the A303 near Sparkford I think) I feel it’s somehow uplifting to think someone has gone to all that trouble to amuse or celebrate with such a transitory structure.

This one?! Lol!

One of mine is the woodhead pass, nice views over the reservoirs towards glossop

the yard gates as I am going home

I like here. Laggan Dam, Loch Laggan nr Ft. William. Lovely views

Might I also note this is where the BBC Show ‘Monarch of the Glen’ was filmed. This building which can be seen over the Loch was used for the show

I always enjoy going along the M5 south of Bristol, humprey the camel and son, the wicker man. Pity the dinosaur has gone from near bridgewater, looked good peaking out from the trees onto the motorway
does anyone remember the elephant that used to be there?

Soon as I saw this thead, I though, it has to be the Camels, don’t remember the elephant thou, when was that there? :stuck_out_tongue:

The other one has to be the towers/chimneys at Sheffield before they blew them up

Well it does look a bit tight to pass 2 deckers…

The elephant was one of the kiddies slides from a little chef (the trunk was the slide). That was down on the A38 between the M5 and Exeter Racecourse

Yeah i know the one you mean, at bottom of Exeter hill in the middle of a field. it was pink last time I saw it. (unless i was drunk!) but there was one near the camel up near junction 22.I think it got over grown because it wasn;t kept in such good condition as the camel. I am going back about 30 years now my kids used to look out for both of them on the way to devon for a holiday, used to keep them quiet for ages! :stuck_out_tongue:
anyone remember the “bertie bassett” made from straw bails on the A303?

celtic park, forth rail bridge, monte bianco, duomo in milan, lake como to name a few

i allways thought the Angel Of The North was a great site

I agree, but can never understand why it,s left to rust, it would look more impressive if painted gold or silver… or better still black & white stripes with a number 9 on it,s back, and a Shearer mask on
