What is old school

My Mrs is old school, lights off and ■■■■’s first before going downstairs. No wonder I’ve always got sore ■■■■■■■.

 ffs that’s just convinced me to get a beer,
Keep it up dave

Don’t miss the rough arsed trucks, roping and sheeting 2 sheets and a drip, and fully roped, every ■■■■ day in all weathers, sleeping across the engine cover in a day cab with no night heater, or as said feet out of window in narrow cabbed TK  .

Miss the social life with a lot of drivers as it was.
Although I am still one of the few old school on a lot, but not all nights out (and still meet up with a lot more) who refuse to be ‘‘kept in my place’’ by obeying the ‘‘Work/sleep in laybys for 9 hours/work again’’ ethic that has been widely achieved towards many of today’s drivers. :unamused: who prefer endurance tests to a job of work. :bulb:

I’ve put this on the correct thread this time btw. and not the London thread. :unamused:

I’m only 28yrs old so clearly not oldskool but I try to work like it. Park up at night near pubs, cafe’s in the morning, fixing as much as I can on the lorry to keep going etc.

Couldn’t fix the lorry this week on the road though when my alternator belt snapped and wrapped itself up in the alternator. Had to wait a few hours for the alternator as the local Volvo didn’t keep one in stock for such an old unit the fitter said, a 2008 FH!

You sound ok bud, a proper driver.
You can be honourably Old school from me, may even let you join ‘The ■■■■■■■’
See dipperdave for the …initiation. Good luck with that one. :grimacing:

old school isn’t anything to do with age nor how long you’ve been doing the job.

taking a pride and an interest and learning, wanting to learn how to do the job well.

i’ve worked with people been doing the job years who will never be lorry drivers as long as they have a hole in their arse, others both younger drivers and older drivers new to the game who have that desire to do the job right, take responsibility etc, they’re already old school in mind and none the worse for that.

old school means loaded has priority to unloaded,or heave has priority to light,or,hill climbing lorry has priority to hill down driving,…

So ‘Old School’’ in terms of being a driver, is more of an attitude and a state of mind.
Yeh, I’ll go with that, there are a lot of young lads today that have that pro. aura about them , and I also see a lot of more senior drivers, and wonder what happened.

Btw I think I’ve scared off Mr ginge

You sure about that ■■ cos I haven’t a bloody clue what the hell that means …

edit … just deciphered that (I think) … but that’s not ‘old school’ but common sense, but today’s drivers … yes that is old school after all

Just getting side tracked by my PS4.

I agree with the idea of it being a mindset, you can make this job good fun if you want. None of this maxing everyday parking in layby’s constantly. Where I work there is a group of us that can manage to meet up in truck stops occasionly and don’t stress if we need to stop for a 45min but end up in there for an hour.

One thing im definitely not interested in though from what i have heard is this roping and sheeting malarkey. I don’t even like low loader work if its not sunny ha.

As for the ■■■■■■■ comment, it seems like you are all having the craic so don’t mind joining.

When I go to tips they say to me,and they are young boys that I have to meet…in the Tanker game…Rog…your old school… Is that a time or a reference then it was only natural to help out your fellow driver. For sure I like it when they say it…coz they say it with respect… Where the xxxx has it gone wrong.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you had been given enough oxygen at birth?

LOL - Someone is heading for a fall…

Rog270:
For your 7/half tonne drivers information. As proper truck drivers know Grand Buffet Cambril Spain…can now be found on the N 34…I hope this helps you

Hi Rog 270. I remember The Restaurant at Cambrils where we used to pay 600 pesetas and eat all you want, and sitting down at Tillys in El Puig and Modescos around the market. for days on end waiting for a load. I just bought my first new truck a DAF 3300 it was 1984. Im retired now enjoying my travels in the Motorhome.

My first truck was a Merc 1418 bullnose in 1973 with a wide spread axle tandem flat. Used to do timber from London to Cardiff reload through Hills of Cardiff mainly fruit, then tip that in the London Markets at night all handball.

then there is the other side of old school that doesn’t get mentioned too often . bad guts from all those greasy breakfasts , bad chest from too many cigs , back and legs knackered from hand balling and jumping down off the flats and hands covered in callouses from the ropes ( ladies don’t like rough hands ). the younger generation should be grateful for all the automatic gearboxes and the other things that make the job easier , you won’t end up in the state the old timers are . as much as we enjoyed our time on the road i wish we had the benefits you have .

Ha!..you mean my arthritis in both hands, the upcoming right knee and left hip replacement…oh and dont forget my previous heart attack and subsequent triple bypass, were all caused by jumping off trailers and by 'orrible bosses making me drive uncomfortable lorries?
Where do I sign up to claim against bad working practises??

Knocked daily fry ups on the head about 15 yrs ago, never smoked in my life, ok my knees are a bit iffy from jumping out as we used to, rather than stepping out, hands were as rough as ■■■■ once over with wet ropes etc, but ok now. I listened to my life coach Gok Wan, so when I exfoliate and moisturise every morning I also rub the cream into my hands. It’s great being old school as well as a new modern man, that is why I look younger than I am,. :sunglasses: One of my best mates who is 6 years older than me is often mistaken for my Dad, I kid you not :sunglasses:
Respect to the Gok.

no one believes my age either RR, I’m afraid I dont exfo and moisturize, so it must be my natural boyish good looks!

“Old school” means knowing which part of the steering column wiring loom you need to short out to make the tachograph stop recording driving, but still record time while one-hitting it back from Rome so you can cover 400 miles during your nine hours off. :stuck_out_tongue:

A wire, a crocodile clip and a needle…worked on a Scania 112/113 just as well Harry
